Joining a new company can feel overwhelming. I've found the outside-in approach to work effectively as a software engineer. Instead of diving into the codebase immediately, start by learning more about the product and business. I wrote about the 5 tips in my latest newsletter post. Read here: https://lnkd.in/enUuz5gv

When I made the switch to become a software engineer four years ago, I didn't have a degree in Computer Science or engineering and did not attend any bootcamps. Most of my knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and industry standards were self-taught. Of course, there were lots of mentors that helped my on my path, of which I am forever indebted to them. As I prepare to leave GAOGAO at the end of the month to start my masters degree at NUS, I wrote about the journey that got me to this point in the link below. #softwaredeveloper #softwareengineering #selftaught #mastersdegree #computerscience

What made you decide to become a software engineer? ✏️ Becoming a software engineer was a natural progression for me. From a young age, I was always fascinated by technology and its potential to solve complex problems and improve people's lives. As I grew older, I became increasingly drawn to the creative aspect of coding and the endless possibilities it offered for innovation. Ultimately, I realized that pursuing a career in software engineering would allow me to combine my passion for technology with my desire to make a tangible impact in the world. It's incredibly fulfilling to be able to leverage my skills to develop solutions that address real-world challenges and contribute positively to society.

Senior Software Engineer | M.S. in Computer Science | Specializing in Process Optimization for Software Companies
𝐈'𝐦 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 it's not what it sounds like. 𝐈'𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐣𝐨𝐛, it's more about a promise to myself. I'll quit the day I stop loving what I do—coding, making things better (optimizing processes), and leading my team. That's the day I'll truly 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭. Being a team leader has shown me how important it is to love not just the work itself but also the way we can make things work better and how we guide our team. Software engineering isn't just a job for me; it feels more like a hobby. It's about working together with my team, solving problems, and creating new things that make a difference. 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬: Find what makes you happy and go for it. Make sure what you do feels more like a fun hobby than just a job. Help others, share what you know, and try to make things better for everyone around you. Let's not just work to live, let's love our work and live to make it better, every single day. Keep loving what you do, and let that love show in how you lead and make things better. #DoWhatYouLove #LeadWithPassion #MakeADifference"

Observed a pattern in me, as a software engineer for different companies earlier, I was obsessed with perfection, double-checking everything to ensure it was just right, Now, it's has become more like, "Ship Fast, Polish Later!" 😶 #startupjourney #startupcommunity #startups #startupstories

The recent months have been truly exhilarating! I completed my software engineering bootcamp in November of last year. Come January 2024, I dove into an externship project at TripleTen alongside a talented group of developers. During this time, I gained valuable hands-on experience with technologies like Apollo Client, GraphQL, Vite, MySQL, TypeScript, and explored other tools such as Keystone and Storybook. Towards the end of February, I embarked on a Data Science Bootcamp, eager to delve deeper into the realm of analytical technology. I'm thrilled to expand my knowledge and skills, particularly in merging my software engineering background with principles of data science, including machine learning. The learning never truly stops #tripleten #softwareengineering #datascience

Just finished my first week as a Full Stack Software Developer at Parq! Here's what I've learned so far: • 🧠 The ability to pick things up on the fly is perhaps more valuable than prior experience. You can't know everything, but if you can learn anything, you bring value immediately. • ⏩ Start-ups are fast-paced. Goals have to be identified, organized, prioritized, and met on time. Making that process a well-oiled machine is critical to success. • ⚙️ Create a hypothesis and test it. Keep that hypothesis in mind during the whole task in order to stay on target. • 💯 Presentation is everything. Doesn't matter if you're an engineer or a sales person -- a great product that looks terrible (or has a terrible demo) might as well be a bad product. • 🥪 Take a lunch break. Maybe a walk break too. Stepping away from a problem for a few minutes and coming back can give you a fresh perspective, getting you to a solution faster than banging your head against it when you're hungry. • 🦆 Talk through problems. Rubber duck debugging is real and it helps. (Better with a human, though) This first week at Parq has been full of great projects and great learning opportunities! Shoutout to Walker Ryan, our CEO, for his vision, drive, and passion for delivering epic products to customers. Shoutout to James White, our head engineer, for his amazing teaching ability, technical expertise, and level head when things get sticky.

Learning events, hackathons & technology presence for Lloyds Banking Group's Engineering & Tech community. PSPO accredited Product Owner.
Listen to Andrew’s thoughts about our industry-leading Reboot Hackathon events and drop me a line if you want to hear more about how we’re innovating in technology learning to help our colleagues #engineerthefuture. #Reboot #NoOrdinaryJourney
🤷It’s just a tech event, surely it won’t have a big impact….right? WRONG! The brilliant Andrew is a shining example of why we love our Reboot colleague events and hackathons. He’s thrown himself into them, and was inspired to change his career trajectory from customer service assistant to software engineer apprentice. We know he’s going to absolutely smash his tech journey. ⭐

Making the Most of My Summer Break This summer, I took the opportunity to dive into the core of software engineering and designing data-intensive applications. Thanks to Tech ALPHAlogix I collaborated with a very talented team and learned the value of effective communication and teamwork. Balancing work with personal growth, I’ve honed my time management skills and deepened my technical knowledge. Excited to bring these new skills back to my studies! #SoftwareEngineering #SummerBreak #LearningAndGrowing
