Medical imaging plays a crucial role in designing, implementing, and evaluating clinical trials for anti-obesity drugs, providing objective measures of treatment response, safety outcomes, and metabolic changes associated with drug therapy. However, discovering effective anti-obesity drugs poses several challenges due to the complex nature of obesity and the underlying mechanisms involved. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), collectively known as cross-sectional imaging, are considered the standard choices for assessing body composition to evaluate changes in visceral adipose tissue and other metabolic parameters. Additionally, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), commonly used in bone-health trials, is increasingly being adopted for body composition assessments in anti-obesity drug trials. Both cross-sectional imaging and DEXA are valuable tools for assessing body composition in clinical and research settings. Cross-sectional imaging offers detailed tissue characterization and regional assessment but may be limited by cost, accessibility, and radiation exposure. In contrast, DEXA provides quick, whole-body composition measurements with minimal radiation exposure but may lack the tissue differentiation and regional assessment capabilities of cross-sectional imaging.
