Every year I pause to reflect on my "dissertation defense" date as a type of anniversary: July 3, 1996. This week and that date mark 28 years being with my terminal degree. It's also always a delight to see posts of my students or student colleagues defending their dissertations, or recalling their defense anniversaries. Those are special moments to reflect upon, given the hard work, sacrifices (by students and their families), and often challenges faced post-graduation with positions, careers, and the like. Keep posting those stories of resilience and success! This year, for this week, instead of posting on the defense I wanted to share another historical artifact from immediately thereafter from my early professor role. This post was prompted by a retiring colleague who sent me a 23-year-old magazine from summer 2001 before I received tenure at Old Dominion University. My team was among those profiled in this issue. The research launched my career in traffic psychology (with a public health goal) and led to my tenure and promotion. I was fortunate at the time to receive internal and external attention for it as were my wonderful students. I share the article here as it came five years after my degree and still gives me great pride as foundational work of what was built here at ODU over the years. (I also have not looked so young since! I am still having fun, though!) PS: Ignore the type-o in the article title! Also, I must give copyright credit to ODU for this magazine, called "Quest," and its run over several years to focus on faculty research and innovation. My article was published in Volume 4, Issue 2 in 2001.

COLLEGE CONNECTION’S ACTION PLAN FOR RISING SENIORS My name is Sam McLaughlin, Founder of the new college website: collegeconnectiongroup.com. Rising seniors should set up their college application accounts in early June because: A) There are a number of different college application portals - commonapp.org, https://lnkd.in/enNam_ii - not to mention some colleges require their students to apply directly through the colleges’ own websites: apply.mitadmissions.org, rising seniors must first compile their lists of colleges to know which college application portal(s) to apply through; and, B) College applications are cumbersome to complete. Currently, the only college essay the students can safely work on are their main college essays. CommonApp has already posted their seven college essay prompts for the 2024-25 college application season. I always advise my private college counseling students to choose the final prompt: “Share an essay on any topic of your choice.” The main college essay should be between 550-650 words in length. The most important guideline the students must follow in order to craft compelling, dynamic, deterministic college essays is authenticity: The students must ensure that their true selves shine forth throughout their college essays. And, who knows the real students better than the students themselves? No one. As for the colleges’ supplemental essay(s) and/or short answer question(s), the colleges will release this information from July 01, 2024 to August 01, 2024. Students can access these prompts through the College Dashboard section of their college application portals. Because these essay prompts often vary from year to year, students should wait until this information is fully uploaded onto their college application portal(s) before penning their responses to these prompts. For additional College Essay assistance, students can order a copy of my brand new, 58 page, copyrighted College Essay Writing Manual, including the option to purchase any one of the following enhancements: one to two and a half hour virtual sessions with me to discuss the students’ essay topics, along with two to six substantive reviews of the students’ main and/or supplemental college essays. Such reviews will result in my proposal of comprehensive suggested revisions to the students’ essays.** (Priced from: $500 - $2000). To order my new manual, along with any enhancements, message me directly, at: [email protected] **For examples of the end product of my work helping my private students substantially enhance their college essays, go to the College Essay portion of my new college website, reviewing Sample College Essays 1-3. For examples of my work editing my private students essays, compare Rough Draft College Essay 4 with Sample College Essay 4 and Rough Draft UCAS Personal Statement with Sample UCAS Personal Statement, also found in the College Essay portion of my website. All the best to all the students, —Sam
