What made Dansk Golf Union's 8-week program a success? 🏆 Its focus on community building, social activities, creating a welcoming environment for female golfers. ⭐And feedback. ⭐ “When you present something new, feedback is so important. We were specifically unsure whether 8 weeks were perfect, too short, or too long. And we also wanted feedback on the price of the program. Thanks to Players 1st, we now know that almost everyone likes the price and length.” - Sarah-Cathrine Wandsø, development consultant at DGU. Augusta National is far more than a golf club, and it's far more than the site for one of the world's leading sporting events. Indeed, it is a one-of-its-kind organization that exemplifies excellence across a multitude of disciplines. As I departed from Augusta over the weekend, I reflected on this special place that Jim Nanz aptly described on television as "a tradition unlike any other." (Augusta subsequently trademarked this phrase). Below are three observations that struck me as fundamental to Augusta's remarkable success. ✅ Attention to detail. At Augusta, every detail is attended to. From the perfect fairways, where not a single blade of grass appears out of place, to the spotless stands and the staff's service, nothing is overlooked. ✅ A vision unlike any other. Augusta was born in 1932 out of the dauntless vision of Bobby Jones (then an iconic US golfer) and British golf course architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie to be a leading national golf course that would host world-class competitions. The club's commitment to being the best is reflected in everything you see—from television coverage to positioning attendees as "patrons" rather than spectators to the club's blue-chip membership. ✅ Long-term decision-making. Augusta does not play for short-term wins. It is invested in long-term value creation and a fundamentally different product than other tournaments. It executes for the long term with unwavering commitment. The famous 330-yard Magnolia Lane that extends from the entrance gate to the clubhouse was paved in 1947, yet the large magnolia trees that line both sides of the road date to the late 1850s. Anchored in tradition but embracing change with cutting-edge technology and analysis—that, to me, is what makes Augusta great. If you have not visited the Masters, I would encourage you to do so—even if it is only to study the remarkable Augusta National institution. #AugustaNational #Golf #Excellence #MagnoliaLane #Tradition

Less than 3% of recreational golfers are Black. Why? The sport is not incentivizing to Black people. Perhaps that's by design. When you close your eyes and think of a golfer who do you see? White, male, stuffy, bloated, cigar-smoking individuals perhaps? Very much akin to spaces occupied in corporations - less than 2% of Fortune 500 CEOs are Black. Until 1961, the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA), prohibited Black players from competing. The PGA would, however, permit Black people to participate as caddies and groundskeepers. Cruel. Despite these clear social injustices, Black people have played the game of golf for over a century, creating Black golf clubs, and opening Black golf courses (read: we made a space for ourselves). Our #SoulfulSundays community is a reclamation of love for the game of golf, and reflection of our love for each other. We'd love for you to join us. You don't have to know how to play, or even have clubs. We meet at Sligo Creek Golf Course on Sundays at 8:30am, warm-up and provide basic swing instructions at the practice net, then play 9-holes in a scramble format. The round lasts about 2-hours, and afterwards we gather for adult beverages and vibes. Not only are you welcome, we created this space with you in mind. You don't have to be any good to have a great time. It's a safe-space for ashy swings. The video linked below is an example of exceptional messaging for a private club. They nail both the emotional and value of joining a club, and demonstrate how their resources and facilities support their values and mission. The ability to clearly communicate your vision is not a panacea, but it provides a NORTH STAR for your staff and attracts consumers who believe what you believe. Who didn't love putting contests as a junior golfer? Playing against your friends for £1, for golf balls or event for a plate of chips, these were serious events. They were more than that though, they allowed us to bond over short contests whilst working on the most important parts of our games. They made us feel like we belonged as part of the junior golf scene at our clubs. In our 11th White Paper, we addressed the issue of belonging. Making new golfers feel like they belong as part of the golfing community is crucial to grow our sport. One idea is to build leagues at your club so that people we can foster this feeling of fun competition and build that feeling of belonging. Discover how to build your golf business by leaning-into making people feel like they belong: https://lnkd.in/eXRvRKPS 📸 : Lukas Opekar (Unsplash)

High-performance Racquet Sports specialist, with a proven track record of designing, developing, and implementing successful concepts, business models, and programs in Europe and in the United States.
Ever noticed how Aryna Sabalenka’s has been changing her strategy on the court lately? She’s shifted to “going for bigger targets,” while still smashing the ball in every single occasion—her shots flew at an average speed of 74mph at last year’s Wimbledon, surpassing the guys’ average of 71mph! This approach is the perfect metaphor for what we should be aiming to do in tennis club management these days. Let’s be real, many tennis directors and club managers get tempted to jump on every new trend. But the real win comes from picking those big, strategic goals that truly resonate with what our club stands for in the long run. Let’s think again about Sabalenka: it isn’t just just about playing it safe—it's about being smart where and when it counts. Whether we’re looking at boosting member engagement, upgrading our facilities, or rolling out cool new programs, the goal is to channel our efforts into making a real and measurable difference. By targeting these significant, strategic objectives with clarity and purpose, we’re not just upping our game—we’re also elevating the experience for every member and visitor. Let’s go for those big targets!
