Make Safety Personal. My teams hear me say that all the time, but making it personal is the best way I know to make it happen. Our job, in the most basic of terms, is to make sure everyone that steps onsite goes home to their families in the same condition they arrived. We have all kinds of tools and tech at our disposal to do our jobs and build great things, but at the end of the day it boils down to getting everyone home to their families. Responsibility v.s. Tasks. Our employees have a sense of ownership for their work. They give every project their all. To that end; ❎We don’t just give them tasks. ✅ We trust them and give them responsibility. A typical conversation with an employee would go something like this: “ I trust you to get this done and to do whatever it takes to get there. This is the general box of what I’m thinking, and if it goes outside that box, come over and we’ll discuss it.” That way they are free to take whatever avenues they want and take ownership of the project. Every employee is different. And every field manager can handle a different amount of homes. We don’t want to overload our field managers with work we feel they can’t complete. ➡What do we do?⬅ At the beginning of each month, I meet with the head of construction, and we discuss in-depth how much we feel each field manager can hold. She then divides up the homes to each manager based on their capabilities. It’s counterproductive to try to try to stuff your employees with tasks just to try to get the most out of them.
