To my ex-Canadian Tire colleagues affected by the 3% layoffs of corporate staff, i am thinking of you all 😓 Having also been laid off at the beginning of the summer I know first-hand how challenging the news can be when unexpected. The current Canadian retail landscape in 2023 is challenging, to say the least, with; 🍁Canadian Tire layoffs representing the loss of 200 employees. 🍁 Hudson Bay letting go of 2% of its workforce, estimated to be about 250 employees. 🍁Nordstrom closed all of its Canadian stores, leaving 2,500 staff unemployed. 🍁Best Buy reduced its workforce by 0.7 per cent, estimated at 700 employees. (Source -Toronto City News) From these larger corporations and considering the smaller independent/ boutique retail stores that also have had to make changes, the candidate market is saturated with super talented and highly qualified individuals through no fault of their own. If you have been affected by changes in the retail landscape we will no longer see dramatic salary increases offered in 2021 and 2022 for moving companies seen during the skills shortage. It's crucial that you consider your expectations for your opportunity to maximize your applications 🚀 💰 Salary - Is there flex in your expectations, I am not saying devalue your skills however you need to be competitive due to the availability of qualified candidates. A diverse staff is like a winning trivia team. Alex Manley uses this comparison in The New Masculinity, and it's the best case for DEI hiring initiatives I've heard. Think about it. If you show up to a trivia event with a table of musicians, you'll certainly get the question about Otis Redding right. But you'll fall behind when a competitor can list all of Babe Ruth's stats, or knows who Hammurabi was. Your team can win if you have a sports expert, history buff, scientist, and pop culture expert. In the same vein, you'll be best prepared to handle anything thrown at a team when you can tap into more wells of wisdom. Your accounting team may need college graduates with accounting degrees. But if those folks came from different backgrounds they'll broaden your organization's horizons. They'll better understand the populations you serve. They'll foresee challenges you'd never anticipate. Ethical reasons to have a diverse team aside, this edge is essential. In a world where the differences between companies can be razor thin why wouldn't you want every advantage?

They can reach things up high, like glass ceilings, and cardboard boxes on the top shelf of the break room, and help break them down - plus, you get bonus accessibility if they are also tall! 🦕 #height 2. Their easily visible hand makes your team seem the most enthusiastic when the boss requests volunteers for her pet-project side quest! 🙋♂️ #volunteer 3. Since their shirt sleeves are always too short, they won't waste a single second rolling them up before getting their hands dirty! 👏 #gitrdone 4.
