The bond between humans and their adopted pets is such a unique, special connection. Dottie is a rescue dog we adopted. She is my partner at work, hiking, and laying on the couch. Once you adopt a pet it is important to take care of them to maintain that bond. A proper diet, exercise, preventative checkups, and necessary medications are all important to keep your pet healthy. Pet parents are all heart! According to Best Friends Animal Society, 9 out of 10 pet parents consider pets a family member. And it’s no different when they’ve welcomed a rescue pet into their pack, whether permanently or as fosters. Research by Forbes shows that some of the top ways pet parents show their love toward their fur babies include: Taking family photos with their pet (58.7%), Including their pet in a holiday card (36.2%), Regularly preparing homemade food or treats (45%), Ordering their pet a special treat at a restaurant (43.2%), Taking their dog to dog-friendly activities (43.2%), Buying their pet a holiday gift (67.2%). How does your organization help care for special needs pets? At the BUB Fund we are always looking for innovative and sustainable systems of care to help protect the human-animal bond. Brynn is a dog we're currently working with who has been at our municipal shelter for quite some time. Here's a bit about her: "Brynn is nearly perfect aside from not living well with cats and kids. She is house trained, chatty (not barky--more like she'll harumph and whine and tell you she doesn't agree with you), gives the best kisses and has an adorably perfect snore. She does well loose and out of a crate. She does have allergies which make her care more expensive than the average dog's. She is currently taking apoquel daily and recently started cytopoint along with it. Brynn's monthly care has her in about the $175 range." This cost of care is out of reach for many folks. I'm curious how other organizations help defray these costs. We've been offering $1K grants to adoptive pet parents to help defray costs ongoing, but know that that is only a temporary solution. Are there ways to help folks who would be able to provide a great home for pets like Brynn? I know the solutions are out there and would love to hear how others approach issues like this.
