Why? - Soft drinks and fast food can achieve a cult-like following for certain items, Be it the McRib effect, or the seasonal Kit Kat effect. The scarcity and the return of favorites create an instant demand and bolster the main brand image. - The connection of these two brand offerings, pineapple, Pepsi, and pizza, is, to keep the alliteration going, pitch perfect. The pineapple on pizza debate is peak pop culture, and this just fits. Wrapped in riches: Your next burrito bowl may set you back more than you expect. The Mexican fast food chain Chipotle announced plans to increase prices again, marking the 4th such increase in the last 2 years. • The company is blaming soaring ingredient costs and rising wages — but whatever the logic, Chipotle is raising prices because it can. The brand is arguably in its strongest position in its history: since 2001, Chipotle sales have skyrocketed some 65x, equivalent to growing revenue ~22% every year for 21 years. • There's a few reasons for Chipotle's rapid growth: quick and tasty food, but also a relatively rare business model in the world of fast food. Unlike most of its main rivals such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell or Subway, Chipotle doesn’t franchise its restaurants. • With every site run by the company, Chipotle HQ can keep a close eye on the day-to-day running of every outlet — although it failed to prevent an outbreak of E. Coli and food poisoning that was linked to some of its restaurants, which sent sales plummeting in 2015/16. • The price hikes come just a week after Chipotle announced it was testing a robot that can assemble burrito bowls and salads. While there are some restaurant categories that are growing fast and others that are shrinking steadily, it’s always possible to find chains outperforming their peers. When comparing Average Unit Volumes, the leading chicken chain sells more than three times the median category performance, and the leading burger chain sells twice as much as the category’s median. Similar situations repeat in Mexican, Snacks, and Sandwich. Pizza is the category where is the hardest to stand out. From the guest experience to throughput, the share of off-premise, brand, marketing, and technology, multiple factors play into sales volumes. "Worst excuse for pizza I've ever had." In 2009, Domino's Pizza was in trouble. Sales were declining and they had a reputation for cranking out pizzas that were about as appetizing as cardboard. In late 2009, they launched the "Pizza Turnaround" campaign - videos of real customers criticising Domino's pizza, followed by the company's executives taking the criticism on board. They then showed how they were using this feedback to create a new and improved pizza recipe. (I've included the link to the video in the PS below, so you can watch it for yourself) The result? The company reported a 14.3% increase in sales in the first quarter following the campaign's launch. Domino's continued to prioritise customer feedback, introducing new menu items and features - like online ordering and pizza tracking - based on customer preferences. By 2017, Domino's was in the number #1 spot of pizza chain restaurants with $5.9 billion in annual sales. Taco Bell fans, rejoice! One of the most highly anticipated collaborations is finally getting a nationwide release. Two years ago, Taco Bell and Cheez-It introduced two innovative menu items featuring a massive cheese cracker. It's 16 times larger than the regular size. Starting June 6, these popular items will be available nationwide for a limited time.   The “Big Cheez-It Tostada” and “Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme” are joining US menus after receiving an overwhelmingly positive response during their trial run. Taco Bell announced that these Cheez-It creations have brought something new and exciting to the table.   These collaborations often boost publicity for both brands, extending their reach. This release comes at a time when consumers are cutting back on spending.   The “Big Cheez-It Tostada” is priced at $3.99 and features ground beef, reduced fat sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheddar cheese on a giant Cheez-It cracker. The “Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme,” priced at $5.49, swaps the internal tostada shell for a giant Cheez-It and includes nacho cheese sauce instead of shredded cheese.   Despite a general slowdown in consumer spending, especially among lower-income diners, Taco Bell has shown resilience.
