Authors are often reluctant to hire editors for fear of judgment. I've gone over this before. Judgment is not necessarily negative. Criticism is not necessarily detrimental. Yes, an editor's job entails finding the flaws within written content, identifying them, and suggesting improvements. Now the author needs to go a little bit further. The editor does not focus solely on finding flaws. That's part of the process, but not the entirety of the process. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. Full stop. You write content. Someone asked me what a good journal editor should look like. This graphic about sums it up. A good editor is a servant for the community. Not a servant for their career. A good editor commits to the growth of of everyone. Not to the growth of their CV and citations. A good editor listens and responds to feedback from their community. Not just demands and directs based on their personal opinions. A good editor makes hard decisions. Not just placates the loudest voices. A good editor remains humble throughout their term. Not using their journal as a platform for self-promotion. There are no perfect editors. There are some very good editors who embody these attributes. When you select where to submit your work, send your papers to good editors. Why? Bc they are more likely to give your paper a fair shake. And. They deserve our support. #academiclife

People-oriented or task-oriented? It's a common categorization, but I find it difficult to choose. When I was a newspaper reporter, editors would ask if I was more of a reporter (people-oriented) or a writer (task-oriented). I couldn’t imagine doing one without the other. 🤷♀️ I've found I need a balance of both to be happiest at work, but I suspect that’s not the same for everyone. What's about you? I'm not hiring a full professional editor for my book. Can you guys what I'm doing? I'M CRO'ING MY OWN BOOK. I've had 10 test-readers so far, and I placed 6 user feedback surveys (huge topic in the book) throughout the book. One before the book so I know their level of CRO experience/knowledge One after the first 4 chapters for initial feelings of momentum like the "above the fold" section of a landing page Chapters 5 & 6 are the most tactical-dense chapters, did one after that. 7-9 are different silos of CRO that are important on their own, did one after chapter 9. I dove DEEP DEEP into split testing on 10-14. Survey after 14. Final survey for feedback on the book as a whole and what outstanding questions they had about CRO. Then... I split tested, wrote more on those chapters, sent it to the next 2 people. Did it again, and again. Last reader gave me the photo I attached here. It's wild what it takes, I truly believe in my heart, and now by the data, this will be a huge part of my legacy by the time I die. This book will live years beyond me.
