The timing of the new 6% bond issue by International Hotel Investments plc coincides with the start of a new journey for the company as it approaches its most significant and exciting growth phase in its history. In fact, IHI will be inaugurating seven new Corinthia hotels by 2026 of which six are owned by well-established third-party investors. In addition, IHI is in the process of obtaining planning approval for the development of Corinthia Oasis in Ħal-Ferħ. Over the years, IHI demonstrated remarkable resilience and tenacity including during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic and the decade-long internal political instability in Libya. Indeed, the potential resolution of the conflicts in Libya and Russia could serve as two additional major drivers for IHI to further enhance its profile and pursue its ambitions. A very interesting announcement in today's Financial Times where we learn that Rocco Forte has sold 49% of his luxury hotel group to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (An investment fund with connections at the very highest level in SA). This news underscores the exceptional revenue levels that luxury hotels are successfully achieving throughout Europe. In my sector, which is luxury tourism in Italy, hotel rates have rocketed in the last two years. Areas that are particularly costly include Amalfi, Taormina, Rome, Venice and Florence. The Saudi decision to invest in the Rocco Forte Hotel Group is a strong indicator that these very high revenue levels and consequently high room rates are here to stay. I remember fondly the days when a room at Villa Igiea, Palermo was about €300 per night (before the Forte refurb of course). Now a deluxe double at Villa Igiea starts at around €1250 per night.
