The 2nd ERA4Health workshop took place on February 8-9 in Brussels, fostering a unique blend of expert insights, collaborative discussions, and practical knowledge sharing. 💡 This workshop, hosted by ECRIN, gathered funders, clinical study experts, EMA (ACT EU), European Commission, and HaDEA representatives. The primary objective was to delve into funding of Multinational Investigator-Initiated Clinical Studies (IICS), particularly addressing public health-driven, non-commercial studies. The first day included presentations from different initiatives currently funding or planning to fund multinational studies in different topics (infectious diseases, cancer, vaccines, rare diseases, comparative-effectiveness) and set ups (European, international). The models and funding strategies introduced were then used as a foundation for the second day, reserved for ERA4Health partners. It focused on discussions of possible adaptations of the current Joint Transnational Call funding mechanism to the objectives, of the planned ERA4Health Pilot Call on IICS. We thank all the participants for their invaluable contributions. Welcome back to our journey to the past! Today our path will take us through 2020-2022 and how we handled the pandemic. 🔙 ➡️Due to the increasing demand for Covid PCR tests and a massive lack of test capacity, we set up a L2 lab within two weeks and worked as a subcontractor of Europe’s largest lab chains for diagnostic samples. During this early phase, we processed up to 1,000 PCR tests on a daily basis. https://lnkd.in/ejXJmxnG ➡️ In 2020, we were the first supplier worldwide to collect large quantities of plasma from recovered Covid patients and make it available to the IVD industry to enable the development and production of antibody tests. During the plasma qualification we were also one of the first companies observing the decline of antibodies which could lead to a lack of immunity. https://lnkd.in/euWW9ehu ➡️ With the time it became clear that immunity could not be reached by having covid, therefore the focus shifted to early detection of illnesses by antigen-tests. Consequently, we collected several ten thousand prospective swabs from SARS-CoV-2 -positive individuals at the beginning of the second Covid wave in 2020, enabling us to offer validation services. ➡️The same year BIOMEX was the first company to validate laymen tests in the EU. ➡️ Just like this, we slipped into 2021. To be able to handle the constantly high demand from the diagnostic industry, we continued expanding our laboratory area. Furthermore, with over 70 completed validation studies we established ourselves as experts in the CE marking of SARS-CoV-2 antigen tests. ➡️ In 2022 we successfully completed the 155th SARS-CoV-2 rapid test validation and became the company with the highest number of successful Corona assay validations worldwide. ➡️ We also offered the entire strategy and process for the validation of T-cell immune respond assays, including the sample set, which can be used to identify and measure a recall or memory response in #PBMCs derived from vaccinated or recovered patients. Exciting update from the 26th SMLTSA Conference! SALDA members were actively engaged at the event, showcasing their dedication to revolutionise the laboratory testing landscape. Hosted by the SMLTSA eGoli Branch at the prestigious Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg, the conference was a remarkable in-person gathering post-pandemic, underscoring the theme "Next generation laboratory, a partnership in health." The insightful sessions explored cutting-edge topics such as the evolution of molecular diagnostics, the significance of point-of-care tests for enhanced patient access, and the role of assisted artificial intelligence. The enriching discussions at the event emphasised the crucial role of laboratory professionals in advancing universal health coverage. With engaging discussions on topics ranging from private practice to ethics in lab medicine, the conference sparked innovative ideas. Moreover, the poster session was a testament to groundbreaking research, with presentations delving into pioneering methodologies for combating various diseases, including HIV, Leukemias, Chikungunya virus, Zika virus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Diabetes, among others. A special mention to the esteemed speakers, including Mr. David Tshiporo and Dr. Talkmore Maruta, who shared their insights on overcoming barriers and the role of associations in fostering professional growth in the industry. Dr. Cherie Kruger's research on alternative complementary medicine for cancer treatment also offered a fresh perspective on addressing global antimicrobial resistance. The conference reinforced the industry's commitment to adapt to changing paradigms, echoing the need for continual skills development and innovation in laboratory testing.
