Wawa is traveling south. Philadelphia's famed convenience stores are expanding into the Southern and Midwestern states. According to Bloomberg, the renowned convenience-store business associated with Philadelphia and Jersey pride aims to add 280 new locations in the South and Midwest. The Wawa Factor Many people like eating Wawa's contentious pizza or Built-to-Order hoagies, often using the garbage cans as improvised tables. But don't be fooled—Wawa's restrooms are famously clean. Since its inception in 1964 by the rich Wood family, Wawa has become a cult favorite among Philadelphians, South Jerseyites, and inhabitants of the mid-Atlantic states and Florida. Now, the Woods are hoping that visitors from North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Indiana would rush to its doors as quickly as Rocky did up those stairs. Help us shape West Suffolk Council’s approach to Street Trading.   West Suffolk will be reviewing its street trading policy later this year. Street Trading covers a wide range of outdoor retail and catering activities undertaken in public streets. It includes flower sellers, ice-cream vendors, fancy goods, souvenir stalls and a variety of hot and cold catering activities such as burger vans. The Missed Opportunity of Connaught Village: A Call for Change As we start to work more in the charming yet underwhelming Connaught Village, a pressing conversation needs to be brought to the forefront. Inspired by Dylan Jones' insightful article from 26 February 2024, it's clear that the vision to transform the Connaught Village neighbourhood into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space akin to the elegance of Marylebone High Street, remains unfulfilled. The Church Commissioners' endeavour to replicate such a model has, unfortunately, not seen the success we all hoped for. Connaught Village, despite its potential and notable residents, struggles with a lack of variety, hosting an array of overpriced essentials and a saturation of similar dining experiences. The closure of local cafes and restaurants highlights a trend of decline, a far cry from the bustling, diverse high street we envision. Marylebone High Street's charm is not just in its assortment of boutiques, cafes, and local shops but in the careful planning and management by The Howard de Walden Estate. Their strategy fosters a welcoming environment that benefits locals, Londoners, and tourists alike. This contrast starkly with Connaught Village's current state, where even the management's online presence seems disorganised and outdated. It's disheartening to observe the lack of initiative from the Church Commissioners, especially considering their substantial resources and land ownership. As we delve deeper into this neighbourhood, it becomes evident that more can be done to cultivate a space that champions local businesses, enhances pedestrian accessibility, and truly reflects the community's needs and desires. This call to action is not just about improving retail diversity or dining options; it's about recognising and seizing the opportunity to enhance our neighbourhood's fabric. Let's strive for a Connaught Village that embodies the spirit of community, diversity, and pedestrian-friendliness, making it a true asset to London's landscape. It's been on a downward trajectory for awhile but when even the acclaimed In 'n Out burger chain decides it's too dangerous to keep open their store there - well it really is an all-time low for Oakland, California. It seems the business is putting staff safety in front of profits....their car park has become a crime hotspot. Given this is the chain's first ever closure since it started in 1948 that's saying something. The closure marks a further decline for Oakland - a city that has, already this year, seen downtown Subway outlet and a Raising Cane restaurant shutter their doors - largely due to crime. They follow on from Starbucks, Denny's and Black Bear Diner and a host of retailers and are the 'tells' of an area - if not a city in a civic death spiral. Across 'the Bay' - the internationally famous San Francisco is having its own problems - with city's once prestigious San Francisco Centre (until recently owned by Westfield before they handed he keys back in June 2023), being renamed Emporium Centre San Francisco. But a slew of key brand tenants have gone - Lego, JHollister, Adidas and J Crew among them. They have now reportedly been joined by L’Occitane and Sephora. I term it 'brand flight'! But in the case of these two cities I call it 'brand mass evacuation'! Whatever is going on it's urban decay and it's a civic tragedy and I do wonder if there is a calling for some sort of International Civic Rescue Squad - much in the same way that Saudi Arabia has pulled in what I terms as a 'dream team' of designer, developers, digital eagles and those who can deliver a project. This would be a 'Civic Rescue' A-team who could turnaround the fortunes of troubled locations around the world. Who would be on such a team?
