A link between a USAF F-16 display and leadership’s balance ?
The picture is an USAF F-16 from the USAF Viper Demo team, displaying on the Sanicole Airshow this weekend. An exciting perfomance of the F-16 and its pilot, showing the incredible power of these fighter jets, their flexibility, power thrust, fluid manoeuvres both at low speed and high speed, the latter having each air molecule tremble from the sudden rise of extreme power, not even at full throtlle. Just great to see and feel this thru the air vibes.
But let’s not forget that next to the technical superiority there’s another crucial factor, the pilot and his team. The expertise and years of training in various fighter jets and different situations, the talent and dedication to cultivate this, focus and ultimate concentration, combined with an excellent physical readiness (those G-forces are tremendous) lead to machine and pilot being one single entity !
Leading people, there’s quite some simularity with the skillset of the jet fighter’s pilots and their teams. First of all, the performance in the air is not only the result of the pilot’s capability, but is the end stage of a whole chain of quality level team work, making sure everything is in the perfect state. No organisation will become better if there’s no component of real teamwork at play. Secondly there the necessity for the leaders to balance a lot of skills, for sure not easy. Years of (specific) expertise is and can be an asset, but combined with the talent of feeling and knowing when to move fast forward and when to slow down, thoroughly analyze and decide in the end. And next to providing feedback and be a coach, also receiving feedback, that’s the path forward, an open and constructive environment of exchanging thoughts.
