Ever wondered why we say ‘a big red apple’ instead of ‘a red big apple’? It’s not just coincidence – there’s a grammatical reason behind it that most of us have likely never considered.   So, let’s take a look at the what, why and how of adjective order.   We all know adjectives are describing words used to help paint a more vivid picture when speaking or writing. But we can’t simply use adjectives in any order we like. Rather, there’s a specific sequence that give adjectives proper clarity and fluency.   1. Determiner and/or quantity: Think ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’, or ‘three’, ‘eleven’ or ‘a dozen’.  2. Opinion: This is your personal take on the noun – is it gorgeous or ugly, delicious or disgusting? This sets the emotional tone. 3. Size: How big or small is the noun? This provides a sense of scale for the reader or listener. 4. Physical quality: Is it thick, thin, untidy or smooth? This helps the reader or speaker understand the noun’s physicality.  5. Shape: What’s the noun’s form? Is it circular, square, or rectangle? Adding a shape helps to paint a visual image. 6. Age: Is the noun young or old, ancient or new? Age adds a historical context. 7. Colour: Give it a splash of colour. Orange, blue, neon or pastel? Colour helps to make things more vibrant. 8. Origin: Where’s the noun from? Italian or Japanese? Suburban or rural? Origin adds cultural flavour. 9. Material: What’s the noun made of? Wooden, silk, or plastic? Material provides texture. 10. Purpose and/or type: This adjective adds the final touch. Think ‘four-sided’, ‘multi-purpose’, or ‘premium’.   Importantly, while you needn’t always use so many adjectives to describe an object, the order of the adjectives must follow the above, regardless of how many you choose to use. So, next time you describe the two cute, little, fluffy French poodles your neighbour recently bought, or the beautiful, big, vintage, brown,English rocking chair, you’ll know why they sound so right to you.
