Hey everybody, this is Drew Clancy coming to you today from Dallas, TX. So what are the books that have had a big impact on you recently? For me, one of those books is this one, The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle. Daniel sets out to figure out what makes for great teams, and many of the insights in this book are counterintuitive. He starts off with a great story in the introduction about a competition that was put on by a designer, Peter Stillman. And Peter wanted to figure out what makes for a great team. And so he ran around the world and started off with Business School students, went to some of the best universities, Stanford University, University of Tokyo, several others, and he put together. Teams of four. And the basic idea was each team was given. Ah, 20 uncooked strings of spaghetti. A roll of tape. One yard of yarn and a marshmallow and the competition was to build the tallest possible structure. So. Business School students, being Business School students, got right to work. They strategized, they talk, they put forward several several different ideas, decided on the best one, and then went to work building their tower. And the average tower for the Business School students from all around the world was just under about 10 inches. Next, Peter went to groups of kindergarteners. And again, from all around the world. Again, teams of four. And the kindergarteners took a very different approach. They were not organized at all. They were disorganized, but they stood shoulder to shoulder. And basically their approach was try a lot of stuff and see what works. Well, guess what? The kindergarteners, the average size of the kindergarteners towers was 26 inches versus the Business School students 10 inches. And the lesson here I is that. When the researchers went back and looked at the videos of the different teams working in the Business School students case, it was really all about status and figuring out who's in charge. What can I say? And, well, it sort of looks organized from the outside. Not very effective. The kindergarteners, on the other hand, jumped right in, right. I did experiments, learned work together, figure it out. Frankly, they didn't talk very much at all. It was just an exercise in in figuring things out, running experiments and. Again, that's how he starts off the book. I'll have some more insights later. Take care and have a great day.To view or add a comment, sign in
