I was asked to write a commentary for Nature Structural and Molecular Biology as part of a celebration of their 30 years. I wrote about the value of collaborative research. It is not open access but can be read for free with this link https://rdcu.be/dNOLS Here is one specific point from the article which I think goes beyond academia and science: "There should also be increased recognition that there is a role for scientists who are good at building bridges across research fields. In the same way that we recognize a distinction between method developers and discovery scientists, there are scientists who are devoted masters of a discipline and others who are more inclined to be connection points. These scientists have empathy for the viewpoints of others, can translate a research problem into many different scientific languages and can identify the value of an interaction among others."

such a good article. every upcoming researcher should read it. I agree with Dr. Pedro Beltrao. Innovations and discoveries need countless interdisciplinary and/or multi-disciplinary collaborative teams of researchers and their unmatchable efforts towards science. Thank you for writing such a good and insightful article for us.

Excellent contribution, thanks for sharing!!

The 'specific point' is very well articulated.

Yess! In other contexts, what these people do is called "glue work", and it's just as important in science!
