Excellent article. It touches on something I've wanted someone to speak about: all very well summarized into one article. The distance between reality and hype has always been vast. As reality exposes economic discrepancies, despite attempts to whitewash them, issues persist—from the shrinking informal sectors to exaggerated claims about 4G connectivity and infrastructure weaknesses. I believe the picture we have been shown is more outlined than vividly colorful. The Post Office Horizon scandal - faith in technology, indifference, TV drama The actions which have been undertaken over the last two weeks are quite remarkable in their speed and scope. They were catalysed by a television drama. Not the reports in the news, or indeed the original investigation by Computer Weekly. It's a shocking story, but recent events show us a few things: 📌 We show complete and unjustified faith in technology. When the Post Office decided to buy the Horizon system, they clearly knew much less about how it would work than Fujitsu. And that is saying something, as Fujitsu didn't have much idea. But when post office staff were prosecuted, the technology remained unquestioned. 📌 The scandal has been around for years, the original and stalwart investigations being undertaken by Computer Weekly. It was on the news too, but it didn't gain as much traction as it has now. If a scandal in the news doesn't effect us directly, it seems that we can become quite indifferent to it. 📌 TV drama, part of the creative industries has a massive role in breaking us out of our stupor, creating outrage and making us think. Governments can act quickly and deeply in response. The same creative industries, which the government is reducing support for in terms of education and funding.
