When Madras Management Association (#MMA) organized a talk by Naveen Valsakumar, CEO of #Notion #Press, I travelled all the way from Bengaluru to Chennai to hear his ideas and to meet him. He talked about the transformational wave that he rode from- the traditional Publishing 1.0 to DIY Publishing 2.0. He shared his insights on how Gen AI is shaping Publishing 3.0. He shared many practical tips for authors. Its interesting to note how his early desire to publish a book eventually lead to the biggest disruption in Indian Book Publishing - the creation of Notion Press. At the LinkedIn launch of my eighth book, and fourth fiction book, I want to tell a story of the origin of my pen name for fiction writing. Although I was one of the first bloggers in India, and had thousands of readers way back in 2000, I was very tentative about my book publication. As I always do, I took the most conservative decision in the situation, one that of writing under a pen name. The tentativeness probably had to do with the fact that we put blogs and books in very different categories in our mind. You can make mistakes in your blog, but they are not allowed in books. In any case, the pen name I chose was(and is) Manik Bal. Manik was one of my many names. I am not sure if your region has this tradition, but the place I was born, you had multiple names, given by each of your close relatives, and Manik was given to me by my maternal grandfather. That was only one of the reasons for choosing the name, though. The more important reason was the fact that I was a big fan of two legendary Marathi poets, Grace, a.k.a. Manik Godghate, and Bal Sitaram Mardhekar. I just combined their names to form Manik Bal. Well, here I am, publishing my fifth book under that pen name, and though the origin story really does not matter, it shows the importance of the principle "Just Start."
