Sometimes, the best ideas come from our children.
It was certainly true in this case.
Saturdays are my favorite day of the week, but not necessarily for the reason you may think.
Sure, I love to sleep in, slow down, and enjoy the gift of rest that God has so graciously given us, but this season, there's a greater reason for my love of this day.
My sons Kennedy (12) and Hudson (10) play in their tackle football league games every Saturday morning. It's a chance for me to not only watch the sport I love but also cheer on and encourage my sons in their development.
For my daughter, Reagan (7), however, dreds this day.
It's the most boring day of the week for her, as she sits in the bleachers for hours with nothing to do or nobody to play with.
We've brought her toys, devices, and games, all to no avail.
Her constant refrains of "I'm bored" and "Can we go home now?" are an unwelcome distraction for me and my wife as we watch every play on the field.
A few weeks ago, Reagan asked me if she could bring Brownie, one of her three guinea pigs, to the game.
I was completely against this.
She's a domesticated animal. What if she escapes and we lose her? What happens if a hawk or something swoops down and eats her? Can my young daughter be trusted with a responsibility like this?
After weeks of saying "no," I finally relented and let her bring her beloved pet to the game.
It was miraculous!
Not only was Reagan enthralled with Brownie and not once complained about being at the game, but other young children saw the two of them and came over to play.
In the process, Reagan learned a valuable lesson about responsibility, had a ton of fun, and even made several new friends.
I learned to trust my daughter and start saying "yes" a bit more than "no."
Who can you trust and say "yes" to today?
