Real Estate & Facilities - Strategy & Operations | Building Strong Teams that deliver exceptional outcomes through Ownership & Agility
Inadequate support and focus on health and sports is the primary reason why India doesn’t compete in most sports at the international level. “India’s stunting and wasting figures are devastating. At 18.7 per cent, according to the Global Hunger Index of 2023, the south Asian country has the highest child-wasting rate in the world, reflecting acute undernutrition. Even war-torn and famine-stricken Yemen (14.4 per cent) and Sudan (13.7 per cent) fare better.” More sports infrastructure at the grassroots, a structured grounds-up plan to develop sports, less obsession with cricket, investment in health and nutrition is the way to go. While support for sports is better than before, we need to do a lot more to support our country’s ambition to compete and be counted with the best countries in the world. #olympics #indiaolympics #indiasports

There is a strong positive correlation between a country's economic development and its performance in the Paris Olympics 2024, as greater resources often translate into better training, facilities, and support for athletes. However, exceptions do exist. Countries like Jamaica in sprinting, Kenya in long-distance running, and recently Pakistan in javelin have excelled on the world stage despite limited economic resources, proving that passion, talent, and dedication can sometimes outshine financial constraints. The data used to analyze this trend is based on the 2016 Olympics and the GDP of countries in 2015. The diagram below illustrates this trend and is still proving accurate a decade later in recent Olympics. #Olympics #EconomicDevelopment #SportsPerformance #Inspiration

The corruption of the World Anti-Doping Agency by China is not an isolated incident. Autocracies, such as China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, etc., view a rules-based order as a system to be infiltrated, corrupted, and gamed for their own advantage. This is a global issue, evident in numerous examples, from INTERPOL to the World Trade Organization to the World Health Organization to the United Nations. This is not unique to China. It is a basic approach by almost all autocracies. Remember the DDR? Russia has been particularly adept at cheating every system it is a part of. Of course, people from democracies also cheat. Who can forget the damage Lance Armstrong caused to cycling? But it tends to be at the individual level, not state-sponsored. What is truly unconscionable is how international organizations not only put up with the cheating but accommodate it. WADA is a clear example of that. But so is the IOC with its non-flagged athlete program. Lenin was right--it is easy to suborn democracies from the inside. #cheating #rulesbasedorder International Olympic Committee – IOC J. ⚠️ Caution: Olympics fever post ⚠️ Loving the Paris Games and seeing how extensive and diverse South Africa’s representation is :) From Tatjana’s swimming medals, Craig Fulton taking India hockey to the semi’s and now seeing 2 South Africans (Zeney Geldenhuys and Rogail Joseph) finish top 3 in the 400m hurdles heats I’m feeling big pride to be from this amazing country. As South Africans we have major challenges but we always show up. It speaks of an uncommon resilience, something you want from partners, whether in business or sport. Grit. Politically, we have a GNU which is finding its feet and the wheels of change are turning in government. We are once again leading the world by showing it is possible to share power and work together for a common goal. Paris 2024 claims to be about inclusivity and it is an integral part of the CI of these Games. That is an ideal close to my heart and one I can get behind (even if the opening ceremony made one or 2 poor judgement calls). Diversity is strength and in this beautiful country we have it in droves. We have athletes competing in the top percentile despite having a fraction of the budget other countries put into their sport. It’s an amazing feat to compete amongst the top athletes in the world. We represent on every level and in every field from sport to science, technology, business and the arts. Jis, it’s lekker to be a South African 🥳 Viva Azania, viva 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦 #olympics #southafrica #diversity #inclusivity #olympicspirit

A very well written article by Fatima Ghufran, must read!

Alhumdulillah, another one of my articles has been published in the The Advocate Post. This features a discussion on the lack of support rendered to athletes in Pakistan, and highlights the need to properly fund sports other than cricket too. Arshad Nadeem's historic win alongside elating the nation, also drew attention to the plight of sports such as javelin, tennis as well as the national sport of Pakistan; hockey! The contributions as well as achievements of Pakistanis all over the world across media, business, I.T. , education and law have proven that the nation is supremely talented. Arshad Nadeem is one of the examples! The government needs to allocate appropriate budgets to all sports in order to foster talent and support budding athletes by providing them with proper training grounds that align with international standards. Any feedback and suggestions for improvement would be welcome. https://lnkd.in/epy6ie_3

Sri Lanka sent only 6 athletes to the 2024 Olympics, lagging behind countries with much lower per capita GDPs. Investing in sports can enhance national pride, health, economic opportunities, and youth engagement. I believe Sri Lanka needs to ramp up its sports development strategy and realize its potential on the global stage. Check out the attached scatter plot to see where Sri Lanka stands compared to other nations. Let's advocate for greater sports investment and support our athletes! #Olympics2024 #SportsInvestment #SriLanka #GlobalSports #AthleteDevelopment

This is a nice article. I had a similar thought recently, especially with a country like Nigeria, which has a population of over 200 million people and a budget of 12 billion Naira for the Olympics, yet no gold, silver, or even bronze medals. Instead, social media is filled with embarrissing stories of financial mismanagement by national sports officials. While I agree with the author on the correlation between Human Development Index (HDI) and good performance in the Olympics, I believe there are other factors that contribute to the poor performance of African athletes. Some of the sports are reletively unpopular in African countries. Also, I see significant opportunities for private investment in the the sporting industry in African countries.
