Heading to Paris for symposium on upper limb injuries in athletes as put on by the esteemed Institut de la Main. As one of two American faculty members, I can state that hand and wrist injuries in American athletes are often undertreated due to the perception that the team doctor or "sports medicine" specialist understands the subtleties of these injuries which is often not the case as shown in the attached case where simply immobilizing the PIP joint in extension at time of injury may have avoided a challenging reconstruction. We must abolish the term "jammed finger" as that is only a description of the injury mechanism, at best, and certainly does not delineate what the underlying pathology is.
