A video sparked my interest that shared thoughts and advice on the changes to career development that has been displayed in recent years, by Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis (Authors of ‘The Squiggly Career’). Traditional ways of career development or progression has been a ladder-like image, driven by job titles that stepped up along the way with experience and increasing responsibilities. However, with newer generations bringing a different perspective into the workplace, there has been a shift toward lateral movement in career paths or, as referred to by Tupper & Ellis (2021), a squiggly path.
These are career paths that change fields or roles, not particularly moving in a stepped manner. This creates an opportunity for individuals to learn more about their talents and where it might be a better fit, as well as their passions to identify jobs that may be more fulfilling than their initial trajectory.
We play the most important role in driving our career development, along with colleagues, mentors and employers. I believe that this new perspective on career paths provides endless opportunities, encourages creativity and creates a broader understanding. I would like to see more companies embrace this, such as through role rotation or job shadowing, allowing employees to take risks in their careers within an organisation. This leads to employees using their talents more effectively, encourages skills sharing and expands employee knowledge on different facets of the business, positively impacting the organisation.
With newer possibilities and changing the way we view career development, what does career development look like for you?

Career journeys used to be linear. Start at the bottom and work your way up. That’s changed. Today, careers can go in all kinds of directions. What are now commonly known as “squiggly” careers. Take Teresa Bryson’s journey to Global Culture, Engagement & Experience Manager, for instance.

Watch out for corporate zombies – those who have abandoned their career ambitions and hinder others’ progress. If your manager falls into this category, reconsider your career path and take action before it becomes problematic.
