Dear Community, As we celebrate International Day of Play, let's take a moment to recognize the critical role play has in the development and learning of children. Play is far more than just a pastime; it is a fundamental aspect of childhood that fosters growth in various dimensions. Through play, children develop essential cognitive skills, enhancing their ability to think critically, solve problems, and make decisions. It stimulates creativity and imagination, allowing young minds to explore new ideas and concepts in a safe and enjoyable environment. Socially, play helps children learn how to interact with others, understand social cues, and develop empathy. It is through these playful interactions that they learn to negotiate, cooperate, and share, building the foundation for healthy relationships throughout their lives. Emotionally, play provides an outlet for children to express their feelings and cope with stress. It helps build resilience, teaching them how to handle setbacks and persevere through challenges. Physically, active play promotes health and well-being, encouraging the development of motor skills, coordination, and overall physical fitness. It lays the groundwork for lifelong habits of physical activity and health consciousness. On this International Day of Play, let's prioritize and encourage opportunities for all children to engage in meaningful, unstructured play. By doing so, we not only nurture their present joy and curiosity but also invest in their future potential. Let's celebrate play and all the incredible ways it enriches the lives of our children! This is an informative piece by the Children's Commissioner, Rachel de Souza on the challenges faced by Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children. There is an acute shortage of foster carers for unaccompanied asylum-seeking children in the UK. There are many reasons for this. The bureaucratic and often lengthy asylum process can be off-putting for potential carers. Cultural and language barriers can make fostering such children more challenging. This can also deter potential foster parents. There are good reasons to foster these desperate children. Offering safety and stability in the place of hardship and danger is profoundly rewarding. Demonstrating empathy and cultural sensitivity is life-enriching and educational. In the final analysis, fostering asylum-seeking children is a unique opportunity to make a genuinely positive difference in the world. UASC children are extremely vulnerable. We train foster parents to provide the support they need to overcome the hardships and trauma these children have experienced. Newly arrived students need greater supports A coalition of educators, researchers, and advocates has launched the National Newcomer Network Policy Platform to improve supports for newly arrived students to the United States. The recommendations call for federal legislation and dedicated state funding to support wraparound services for students, including a proposal to strengthen newcomer case manager roles in school districts in partnership with community-based organizations. While some school districts have programming in place to welcome newcomer students and address their needs, other districts haven’t yet built this capacity. Notably, the network refers to newcomer students as a linguistically and culturally diverse group of recent immigrant youth, refugees, asylum seekers, unaccompanied minors, migratory children, and students with limited or interrupted formal education. These students may have varying levels of English proficiency and not all will be English learners, the network said. There were about 1m immigrant students in the U.S. during the 2017-18 school year, according to the most recently available federal data.
