Here's one of the tools we're building at Pachama to enable large scale reforestation projects. Landowners or project developers can upload a land boundary and immediately see which areas are suitable for reforestation, which areas are ineligible, and why each parcel falls into a given classification. This tool replaces a process that could take weeks or months of analysis using traditional methods.

New report from European Marine Board IVZW highlights the critical need for accurate and detailed marine habitat maps. This understanding is key to support a variety of marine policies and ambitions, including the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the European #GreenDeal. Why Marine Habitat Mapping Matters Accurate marine habitat maps are essential for effective marine ecosystem management and policy implementation. Despite their importance, large areas remain unmapped, and many existing maps lack sufficient biological detail. Higher resolution maps are crucial to better represent the complex interactions between the seabed and water column and to consider the marine environment over time. Embracing Innovation The report highlights the limitations of traditional mapping methods and the potential of new technologies, including Hyperspectral Imaging, Photogrammetry, and AI—core elements of PlanBlue's technology. We're thrilled to see the endorsement of our technology as an important part of the strategy forwards. A big thank you to the European Marine Board for their outstanding work in advancing this field. Find more insights from the report in our latest blog, and a link to the full report. The use of #AI is changing our world, allowing us to understand complex systems like never before. How can we use AI to screen for infrastructure vulnerabilities at risk of landslide-induced damage? #Landslide and #debrisflow risk assessments often rely on computer methods to simulate flooding, rapid landslide movement and slope failure. These processes are governed by a complex set of parameters, including rainfall, soil conditions, terrain and landform transformation due to changes to the landscape from human activities. CES-Lab has obtained #Tasmania State Emergency Service competitive funding (total project value of $241,000) to investigate the current gaps in Tasmania’s landslide vulnerability assessments, centring on #Hobart and #WestTamar councils using AI-based landslide susceptibility tools. This project will include the development of a platform allowing current vulnerability models to interface with infrastructure-based datasets, providing a range of benefits to disaster-prone communities. The funding continues the ongoing work conducted by CES-Lab under Drs Ali Tolooiyan, Ashley Dyson, and Gholamreza Kefayati on Tasmanian landslides and debris flow hazards. This project seeks to assess current gaps in Tasmania’s landslide susceptibility maps, which can be significantly improved by the incorporation of additional available data sets, leveraging AI methods to determine the vulnerability of public and private infrastructure.
