✊🏾 Today is the Global Day of Action to #StopSendingArms to Israel to protect civilians amid a humanitarian catastrophe in #Gaza. Arms sales and transfers to Israel MUST STOP and steps towards an immediate sustained ceasefire must begin. Oxfam Australia and over 250 other NGOs are calling on the Australian Government to immediately cease the export of weapons and weapon parts to end users, specifically the Israeli Defence Force. We stand with students at the Gaza Solidarity encampments across the country. We demand a lasting and permanent #CeasefireNOW and to END military exports to Israel! INSIGHTFUL! The Biden administration has the power to stop Israel’s offensive in Gaza in its tracks. Though Congress authorizes military aid, the president has the authority under the Arms Export Control Act to withhold (or threaten to withhold) U.S. military aid when the recipient nation violates U.S. or international law. In terms of the international legal system, Israel is currently violating the Fourth Geneva Convention regarding the treatment of civilians in war time, among a number of other statutes, and it is violating UN Security Council Resolution 2728, which demands an immediate temporary ceasefire. Israel is also in violation of Section 502B(c) of the 1961 Foreign Assistance Act, which prohibits aid to countries that prevent access to humanitarian relief supplies; the 1999 Leahy Amendment, which prohibits funding foreign security forces engaged in the commission of gross violations of human rights; and Biden’s own National Security Memorandum 20, which requires U.S. security partners to provide written assurances that they will use U.S. military assistance in accordance with international law and facilitate humanitarian aid. https://lnkd.in/gphDNnNR #stopthegenocide #stoparmingisrael #sanctionisrael #boycottisrael

How can Feminist Foreign Policies be applied to protect civilians and mitigate civilian harm? Yesterday, it was inspiring to facilitate such a searing and insightful #fishbowl discussion at the Ministerie van Defensie on this, as we discussed Palestine, Yemen, Afghanistan and Iraq. Who's security is central? It's clear that we need to move to more gender-sensitive people centred security instead of nation state security. And take potential civilian harm into account ahead of deciding on any possible military intervention...as well as all (alternative) non-violent foreign policy approaches. Thanks Fatema Jafari, Erin Bijl and so many others for crucial insights. And most importantly - to stop the genocide in Gaza: the Netherlands must demand a permanent #ceasefirenow! This session was part of yesterday's gathering of Nationaal Actie Plan 1325 signatories to discuss how masculinities influence militarisation and how to engage more men in positions of power towards inclusive security and ultimately feminist peace.

Definitely, the #battlefield can be seen and analyzed from multiple perspectives... #Corruption and a “#fifth #column” are two of the biggest problems in #Ukraine. In military terms, the #logistical component of moving #western #weapons and #humanitarian aid through Ukraine's territory - from the western #border to the battlefield - needs to be improved ASAP. Ideally, western specialists and #volunteers could take on this task. At a minimum, teams moving western weapons and humanitarian aid should include #security #guards and #intelligence officers from western countries.

In #Nigeria, two deadly airstrikes in December by Nigerian military forces hit Tudun Biri, Kaduna state, reportedly killing at least 85 civilians. Military airstrikes without known armed group targets that hit civilians make up 6% of the total air and drone strikes in 2023 and nearly 10% of the total estimated fatalities. These rising aerial attacks on civilians may reflect a concerning issue surrounding the military identification of legitimate targets and a growing disregard for civilian casualties. ''Some Iraqi politicians worry that Turkish military interventions in northern Iraq are part of an irredentist foreign policy designed to reclaim former territories lost during the break-up of the Ottoman Empire a century ago. Concerns about perceived Turkish irredentism are reinforced by political rhetoric from top Turkish officials appearing to reject the treaties that established Turkey’s current borders in the 1920s. This is even though such statements appear designed to mainly appeal to the Turkish nationalists that make up the political base of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). There is sensitivity in Iraq over areas that were a part of the Ottoman province known as the Mosul Vilayet, which covered Mosul, Kirkuk, and Iraqi Kurdistan. The Mosul Vilayet was added to the British mandate and subsequently incorporated into Iraq over Turkish objections. The perceived Turkish irredentist rhetoric comes at a cost, harming relations between Ankara and powers such as Russia as well as Arab neighbors.'' Via Amwaj.media #iraq #turkey #kurdistan #security
