But Britain has always been known for the richness of its food-producing land — indeed, that’s a large part of the reason why we’ve been regularly invaded for thousands of years. If you look beyond the supermarkets, there’s still plenty of quality British food available, whether you grow your own in your garden or allotment, or whether you buy from your local farm shop or farmers market. And the best thing is that, besides getting quality food, you’ll also be supporting local producers. For anyone in my area (east Hertfordshire) I’d like to give a shout-out to the excellent Foxhole Farm Shop. But wherever you are, why not use British Food Fortnight as a reason to track down your own local supplier? You won’t want to go back to the supermarket. Sold across Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, these turkeys were immediately pulled from the shelves of all major retailers and any customers who had purchased them were told to return them. 🆕 Lidl GB has announced that by early 2025 it will be reducing the stocking density for its own-label fresh chicken by 20%, affecting the lives of an estimated 70 million chickens each year. Following similar moves by Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Co-op, this is a step in the right direction and aligns with the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) to provide broiler chickens with more space to live. However, Lidl GB has not signed up to the BCC and has not addressed the need to move to slower growing breeds - which is pivotal in improving the lives of chickens reared for meat. 🐔 The BCC is a comprehensive set of science-based criteria that will, when used as a package, significantly improve the welfare of broiler chickens. Without breed change, the full benefits will not be attained. Fast-growing breeds often have poor walking ability, high rates of lameness and spend most of their time (85%) sitting doing nothing – instead of behaving like chickens who naturally like to perch, peck, forage, scratch and play. Many fast-growing birds suffer a range of health issues including compromised immune systems, heart defects, organ failure, muscle diseases and high rates of foot and leg lesions. Only by using robust, slower growing breeds - and also providing them with better living conditions such as more space, enrichments and natural light – can chickens have healthier and more fulfilled lives. 📣 Marks and Spencer and Waitrose & Partners are the only UK retailers to have signed up to the BCC so far. Day 10: What’s the food situation in Churchill? Many Canadians living in northern and remote communities experience food insecurity: one study I read cited more than 60% of on-reserve Aboriginal households in Northern Manitoba experiencing food insecure compared to the national average of 12.7% of Canadian households. At the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, the food travels over 1,000 kms to reach here: 762 kms from Winnipeg to Thompson on a truck, then 402 kms on the train to Churchill and finally 23 kms on a truck out to the CNSC. At the CNSC we have fresh oranges, apples and bananas, along with a limited number of fresh vegetables which have a long shelf life (cauliflower, broccoli, onions etc.) all of which are supplemented with canned fruits and vegetables. I had been told to be prepared for sticker shock at the local grocery store, and as you will see in the photos, many of these products are twice what we would pay in Toronto! I am partnering with the Ward 8 Farmers Market to combat food insecurity in Ward 8. We are hosting a Food Access Meeting to plan steps to increase market capacity and address food insecurity in the ward. The meeting will be held at the UPO Petey Greene Community Service Center on October 18th at 6 p.m. The center is located at 2907 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE. Access to quality food, fresh fruits and vegetables, is not only a public health issue, it is a public safety issue, and it is an economic development issue. By expanding the Ward 8 Farmers Market, food insecurity can be addressed, as well as opportunities for local businesses. With an expanded farmers market, residents can find a consistent array of affordable fresh food vendors, and residents who receive snap benefits have the opportunity to purchase twice as much food as they would have been able to purchase in a traditional grocery store, for the same price. According to the US Department of Agriculture, food insecurity is defined as the lack of access to nutritionally adequate and safe food. Ward 8 is characterized by a severe lack of full-service grocery stores, which contributes to food insecurity. Due to the decrease in access to healthy and affordable food, the burden on health and public safety has increased. The meeting is free and open to the public. In my opinion, a lot of food waste comes from wanting to be a 'good host.' An example is always the number of condiment packages provided at food outlets with our purchases. Our vendors don't want us to run out and leave our meal halfway to get more supplies, so they over-provide.   It's a practice and mindset that I hope we can break soon. Still, until we do, I appreciate Premium Outlet Collection Edmonton International Airport for partnering with the Leduc & District Food Bank Association to ensure wastage is avoided and awareness is raised. A new mobile market is tackling food deserts in #NorthCarolina, where 1.4 million people struggle to find healthy food. Ripe for Revival, a nonprofit based in Rocky Mount, has partnered with Coastal Credit Union to increase the availability of fresh produce in underserved areas. Jonathan Tyndall, operations manager for Ripe for Revival, said the group has a dual mission of supporting local farms and communities, and that by rescuing surplus produce that doesn't make it to grocery stores, Ripe for Revival creates a pay-as-you-go market to reach communities that need it most. "It's just a way for fresh food to go into areas that otherwise don't have the affordability to get it, or they don't have the access to it. Because there's some areas we go to that they don't have grocery stores, and so a round trip would have to drive an hour," he explained. To accomplish its mission, Ripe for Revival has converted five city transit buses and two 24-foot cargo trailers into mobile grocery stores. And with the support of Coastal Credit Union's sponsorship of more than $100 in grants, it's been able to add another trailer to its fleet. These mobile units make about 18 stops and serve about ten counties per week, offering fresh produce and other items such as eggs and meat at prices about 30% lower than regular grocery stores. Tyndall said that impact will now be able to reach new areas and continue to grow with the additional Coastal Credit Union branded trailer. "Part of their dollars allowed us to expand in the new counties. So they're going to help us to expand in Franklin, Granville, Vance, Warren County, and also kind of extend our reach into Wake County, " he added. Tyndall explained the group envisions expanding Ripe for Revival's operations to other counties, with a target of serving 23 and hosting 45 events per week by the end of the year. He said these efforts not only support healthier communities, but also help reduce food waste and challenge the stereotypes surrounding food insecurity. "What do a lot of college students live off of? As a joke, people talk about ramen noodles. So that's actually a form of food insecurity," he explained. "There are certain communities that we go into where they don't have anything except for a Family Dollar [store]. And so, there's nothing fresh for them to go in to purchase." He said that these mobile markets are not limited to those in need. They are designed to serve everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
