My first job was working in Tesco food deli in Islington I was 17 and I wore a bright blue shirt for two years. when my shift was quiet in the deli I’d go on the shop floor and help stack the shelves, but my favourite was working on the checkout because I’d get to speak to the customers I LOVED that job. On more than one occasion customers would enjoy the small talk and say “you don’t belong here” and they’d mean working for Tesco and they’d intend it as a compliment I have always resented the idea that our circumstances mean something about us as people. The idea that you can tell who’s valuable or worthy because of their job title, uni degree, social class, city they live in or how many followers they have It sucks when folks judge your cover and therefore don’t bother to read the book At the same time, I think that we all have to hold ourselves to a higher standing. We have to be the first ones to stop judging ourselves when we fail, to stop beating ourselves up for wherever we are on our journey We have to be the first ones to show up to our current lives as if we’re onto something big You can’t join the dots looking forward, but it certainly starts to make sense when you look back and reflect and realise that even that little part-time job you had as a teenager made you who you are today We’re 6 months through the year so it’s the perfect time to reflect and celebrate how far you’ve come. Meet Caleb! One of our dedicated Baristas in our Pyrmont Support Centre ☕ We sat down with Caleb to talk about his career journey and why he loves working at Hanes: Q: How did you get your job at Hanes?  A: AimBig Employment helped me on my job search. I've had two other barista roles previously before getting my current role at Hanes. Q: How did you find the recruitment and onboarding process? A: Everyone was really helpful, I transitioned into the role very easily and felt very welcome. I was given a tour of the office and got to help figure out a good spot for the coffee machine with the support of my job coach. Overall the process was quick and easy which I really liked. Q: What's your favourite part about your role and working at Hanes? A: Getting to meet and talk to lots of new people all the time. I like making coffees for the friends I've made and get to hear about their day-to-day. I've also enjoyed having the chance to set up systems and routines that work for me in my role, I feel like my own boss a little bit! Q: Do you have any advice for anyone with a disability who's starting a new job? Meet Tony! Tony is a Crew Leader for our site improvement division. He is what we like to call a “generational team member,” meaning his father Jose also worked with us for many years. The 4th of January 2024 marked my last day at Twiga Foods, an organization that was my home for a decade, 8 years of which were on a full-time basis. I was privileged to join the company from its inception when it was idea being bounced between Peter Njonjo and Grant Brooke, and as I exit, I leave behind an organization that has touched countless lives, transformed the B2B e-commerce space in Kenya and the larger region, and tested the limits of what is possible. This incredible opportunity shaped my career and molded me into what I am today. Twiga changed my perspective on what the role of an in-house legal counsel ought to be and gave me excellent insights on how external counsels in general should support organizations. It taught me how to build and lead teams. Dared me to dream and think big. Inspired me to aspire for greatness. Connected me to opportunities I never thought possible. Transmuted how I think. Taught me how to solve problems. Made a swimmer out of a lad who could barely waddle in water. So, what next? Well, I am taking some time off to catch my breath as I prepare for the next phase of my career. A phase which will bring with it as much excitement and even greater growth. These intervening days are a period of introspection, spending quality time with family, building meaningful connections, mapping out my career learnings, building routines that will help me in my next journey, and recharging my batteries in preparation for what lies ahead. Also, I am perfecting my golf swing (especially on the three woods), so say hello when you see me at the greens, and duck when you see me swing the driver. As Scott Fitzgerald says, “we beat on, boats against the current”. And, unlike the tragedy that befell Jay Gatsby, not to be “borne back ceaselessly into the past.” See you in the next chapter!

Today marks 2✌ years at Crumbl for me! 🎉 We joke that 2 years at Crumbl is like 10 years anywhere else, and I can definitely say it feels like I've had a decade's worth of growing and learning since my first day. The day I started at Crumbl, news of our litigation for trademark infringement broke and the "Cookie Wars" started (remember that?) and there has not been a slow day since! There's been highs and lows in every sense of the word: in sales, KPIs, morale, number of desserts eaten, etc, and not a day goes by that I don't count this job as one of my many blessings. My favorite part? I get to work with INCREDIBLE humans every single day. Not only super talented and smart people, but genuinely GOOD people, who make me laugh and smile and who make me feel cared for. It's also so FUN to work at a company with such a loyal following, knowing that the work we do each day gets viewed and reacted to by millions of people every week. TL;DR: I love my job and don't take the opportunity to be doing what I do lightly. And we're only getting started!

23 Years ago, I started my first job at Southport Macca's on the Gold Coast 🍔 . I still think it was the most important and enjoyable jobs I ever had. I was so proud to don my clip-on tie and brimmed cap. 😍 Here are three things McDonald's taught me that I still apply to my career today: Customer Service is king: Working at McDonald's taught me the value of providing exceptional customer service. Teamwork and Collaboration: McDonald's is all about teamwork, and I learned firsthand the importance of working together towards a common goal. Time Management and Prioritisation: Juggling tasks in a fast-paced environment taught me how to manage my time effectively and prioritise tasks based on urgency.

It was supposed to be beer money. But working at Tesco shaped so much of my career. I was just out of art college with a shiny certificate and a lovingly prepared portfolio to my name. The greatest 3 years of my life all wrapped up in a leather zip-up case. People weren’t exactly throwing pound notes at my feet as a fresh-faced student with no work experience so I did what all degree-level students do with their hard-earned qualifications… Get a job in the supermarket. With no intention of sticking around longer than I had to, but with an inherent belief that if you’re doing something you may as well do it well… I got to stacking those tatties. It was tiring, laborious work that certainly allowed me to tell people I was now working out but despite the dull nature of the daily tasks, it taught me something all young people should really benefit from. How. To. Graft. The money was rubbish. The hours were rubbish. The customers were…. Throughout my career, I’ve often looked back on my time in the fruit & veg aisles and credited it with my continued resilience and work ethic. Did I want to work with the general public in supermarket mode forever? No. I won’t even dress that up. Did that experience teach me more than all my years in education about how to succeed in business? You bet it did. How did your early experiences shape your career?

I started in retail at 18 years old- now turning 35 I spent almost 14 years at Walmart, moving up the ladder. Never once interviewed for a job up the climb. The challenge of working and planning such a complex company was exciting and rewarding. Never did I see myself leaving Walmart but life happens. Joining Ollies as a Store manager after needing to relocate back to Pa and again tried to climb the ladder. An Ollies Store Manager their mission is simple and clear. Plan your manifest, make room for the freight, crush it in 2 days, easy lets roll. I grew bored and moved over to District LP. Covering four states worth of stores and endless travel, this became clear I should of stayed running a store. Me sitting still and searching for internals was not my thing. Petco Store Manager- before training was over it knew it wasn’t for me. Took a jump based on the pay specifically. I knew this was not for me. As an animal lover the idea of being over animals sounded great, till you as the gm are the one cleaning the cages. Very limited hours due to volume size, with a stock price hovering under $2.00 Gabes Store Manager- Great bigger box than Ollies so time to roll again. More money so lets make the jump again. Five trucks a week, perfect lets plan some freight. If only it was that simple. Inconsistency with processes would be an understatement. I’m not sure if retail management is getting stale, or once you work for the giants of the world everything else seems less rewarding. Retail and retail management is surely changing.
