I'm coming out of quiet building mode (...more to come soon!..) tonight to speak on a cause that's very close to my heart for #WorkPride2024, myGwork - LGBTQ Business Community's virtual 5-day global LGBTQ conference. 🌈 We'll go back to questions I've grappled with myself many times: - How can we break through barriers to access, opportunities and funding for underrepresented founders? - How can we (successfully) build for diversity, inclusion and intersectionality in the startup space? For the last 12 years, I've sought to lead and been a part of initiatives, talks and conferences tackling closing the funding and data gaps, addressing implicit bias, improving education and training, boosting networks etc... And yet, it baffles me that the stats are still the same (between 0-2%..!!): - LGBTQ founders have raised less than 1 percent of VC funding in the US (2022) - Just 0.48% percent of all the VC funding went to Black founders (2023) - Women-only led companies received just 1.9% of VC funding (2022) But we all know the facts -- diverse teams perform better, generate higher returns and innovation. PSA 🌈 Avoid this red flag ⛳ Please don't ask LGBTQ creators to work for free during Pride Month (or any month of course, creators aren't special, they also have bills and need an income 😁). From a branding and PR perspective, it doesn't reflect well and is a huge red flag for rainbow washing. We work with some great brands who are genuinely dedicated, authentic and supportive towards the LGBTQ community and therefore allocate budgets for campaign activations to show it's more than just lip service. Looking for LGBTQ creators to bring an upcoming campaign to life? Let's talk :) *Rainbow washing is when companies signal support for the LGBTQ community, like adding rainbow colors to their marketing materials during Pride Month, without actually doing substantive work that helps members in the community. 23rd September - Happy Bisexual Visibility Day! 🌈 It's crucial to acknowledge the importance of inclusivity within the LGBTQ community. Bisexual experiences are often misunderstood or overlooked, damaging the equality we strive for. A huge proportion of bi people are facing the harmful effects of biphobia in their daily lives – the stereotypes, the invisibility, the lack of belief that bi people exist – without the benefit of support, reassurance and acceptance from their parents, grandparents and siblings. Let's work together to create a world where bisexual individuals are heard, seen, and respected.
