Implementing Equity & Inclusion in Higher Education | Accessibility Advocate | Empowering Transgender Students for Success
In #HigherEd, Trans Day of Visibility is highly relevant. Trans students face specific challenges because not only are first year students generally experiencing transitions with belonging, trans first year students face additional barriers in housing, campus facilities, athletics, campus healthcare, registrar, and scholarly research. If you work in higher education, being more aware of trans* students and their experiences WILL exponentially increase your ability to have a well rounded understanding of varying identities. I encourage folks to take the time to reflect on how they can support their transgender students in an affirming, equitable way. The toolkit linked below created by CMHA highlights ways to provide affirming care for trans and queer students. I will also link a great resource put together by researchers at #UWO, which focuses specifically on care for trans and gender diverse students. Please share other resources if you have them! #TransDayOfVisibility #PostSecondary #University #College #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #Transgender #2SLGBTQ https://lnkd.in/gNXkGpzu https://lnkd.in/gn45UUHY

Members of #LGBTQIA community often endure discrimination in society. Such intolerance emerges from prejudices internalised over the years. Sensitisation helps change such negative behaviour. The institute has taken a progressive step which will help in creating more perceptive young men and women who understand and accept the beauty of diversity. #inclusionatwork #diversity #inclusion #iitdelhi

While the LGBTQ community overall experience discrimination and societal challenges, our trans and non-binary friends are facing a particularly difficult time – facing an increase in hate crime despite a growth in allyship, and portrayed as a cultural problem in political debate to distract from wider societal problems. In higher education, trans and non-binary students experience greater challenges than their peers when it comes to having experienced the care system or a lack of support at home, financial challenges, heightened loneliness and wellbeing issues, as the Higher Education Policy Institute revealed in a recent report. But universities are beginning to see that their support must move beyond rainbow tokenism to provide active support systems that enable LGBTQ students and staff to thrive. Together with students and staff in (and in support of) the community, we have developed a six-point plan to help universities build an effective support system for their trans and non-binary students, so they can reach their full potential. Thank you to The Peer Partnership, the Student Inclusion Team at the University of Bristol, students who shared their experiences for this piece, and the wonderful Drew Simms. #HigherEd #LGBTQstudents #Studentsupport #Trans #nonbinary

Learn more about how concealable identities are represented among college instructors at research institutions in this study led by Carly Busch and Sara Brownell!
Do you want to know how many science faculty at research institutions are depressed? Or members of the LGBTQ community? Or identify as first generation? Or were community college transfer students? And how many of them share these identities with their students? This is the first study to document these hidden identities of science faculty, assess whether faculty share these identities with students, AND compare the representation of faculty with undergraduates. https://lnkd.in/gshiUGgy We want to get these data out to as many people as possible so please share broadly!
