Can Commentary be Disability Inclusive? During the recently concluded #T20WorldCup, there were many instances where terms like "langda" and "andha" were used casually during commentary. Such terms are not only outdated but also disrespectful and hurtful to individuals with disabilities. Sports have the power to influence so many and it's crucial that our language reflects inclusivity. We need to find alternative words to put our points across. As Disability Pride Month starts, we need to have commentary that celebrates athleticism without resorting to derogatory language. 🎾 Tennis legend, Martina Navratilova once shared a profound insight that challenges the way society perceives disability. Her words, "Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you're needed by someone," remind us that each individual possesses unique talents and strengths, regardless of their perceived limitations. 💡 Navratilova's message encourages us to shift our focus from what people cannot do to what they can contribute, fostering a more inclusive society that values the diverse abilities within our communities. 🌍 As we share this powerful quote on social media, let's spark a conversation about embracing the potential in every individual and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. 🤝 Together, we can build a world where each person is recognised and appreciated for their unique contributions. ✨ #DisabilityAwareness #InclusionMatters #DiverseAbilities #PerceptionIsReality #EmpoweringQuotes #MartinaNavratilova #Tennis #InspiringChange #CelebratingDiversity #EveryoneHasValue #PinkRibbonCommunityServicesAustralia #NDIS #CommunityServices #Australia #SunshineCoast

Yesterday was International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I'm reminded of the crucial role the Paralympics play in increasing visibility for those living with disabilities. It's a day to acknowledge the strides we've made and the work still ahead. With over 4 million Australians living with a disability, it's clear that inclusivity in our workplaces and communities is paramount. The Paralympics provide a platform, but true change happens when we act. As professionals, let's start by embracing diversity in our hiring practices. Have you thought about the benefits of employing someone with a disability? I encourage you to consult with Disability Employment Services Providers like Sureway Employment and Training in your local area. Actions taken today can lead to a more inclusive tomorrow. What steps can your organization take to make a difference? #DiversityInclusion #Paralympics #Leadership

TEDx Speaker | Author | Exec Producer | Award-Winning Consultant I Corporate Advertiser I Internationally Acclaimed Disability Advocate I Visibility for Disability I Though Leader
Paralympics and Disability Awareness When the Paralympics comes around, the support for People with Disability (PwD) is immense. However, the sad truth is when the season is over, the awareness and advocacy for PwD seems to dissipate too. Away from the Paralympics, we know how important advertising is for sharing inspiring stories and conveying important messages, yet it doesn't feel equal for PwD. Why is it that the media forgets about PwD once the Paralympics have finished? In 2021, The Drum conducted a study into representation for PwD in advertising with Paralympic themed ads, tested with two groups 1) a nationally representative sample 2) a sample of People with Disabilities. The study found, whilst the ads are emotional and effective, they also didn't represent the PwD community enough. They wanted their stories to be shared and to entertain, not to just be featured in ads. For advertisers looking to increase awareness and advocate for PwD, I strongly encourage you to: - Share inspiring stories of PwD - Shed light on how we feel as a marginalised group. - Show businesses can take steps everyday to work towards a more inclusive society. For example, 1 in 20 kids have a disability. That gives 20 kids a daily opportunity to learn about: diversity, collaboration, acceptance, inclusion and friendship. Will you lead them? Or will you follow? #Paralympics #ParalympicsAdvertising #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityAdvertising #DisabilityMarketing
