Excellent article on ‘fierce self-compassion’. Especially relevant to public and third sector employees who are pushing themselves beyond their limits to meet other people’s needs, while struggling to prioritise their own. #wellbeing #austerity #selfcare

Volunteer at National Shattering Silence Coalition on Steering & PAC committee(s) and Policy Director/MA, dedicated to improving our country’s treatment of serious mental illness. Spreading awareness on AOT, nationwide.
Today’s NPR “On Point” episode on my son and my reaction afterward, spoken into the camera at the ending here: https://lnkd.in/eZZMcVgz Thank you NPR for producing such a great show today! I know this may be the only episode you do on this subject but if there is an interest in another, We need a medical professional who can possibly speak to the benefit of AOT (a wraparound assistance law) in MA and CT. These 2 are the only states without it, and it’s urgently needed. We need to treat the situation with growing numbers of mentally ill left to fend for themselves in a sea of troubles (criminal, socioeconomic, safety, etc) with as much attention as when Autism awareness came about and now has so many services. There is more work ahead for certain, and I’m so glad the discussion was started. Jail is not the answer…what is?…. I hope it leads to more about modernization of the treatments available (ie. brain scan, TMS, leap method, motivational interviewing, clozaril serum, more DMH adult group home oversight, etc.). You could do an episode on the focus of preventing the SMI population from spiraling downward with more creative ways to connect them to services. Like the “burning building” analogy, prevention needs to be addressed. We as caregivers jwant more of a voice in this conversation, because we are not currently part of the team of people involved in the care. We are the ones who keep seeing firsthand all the cracks in between the “systems” of treatment not working together. Thank you WBUR , Will James and Jonathan Chang for bringing my story to the nation. Laura Balboni Craciun 🙏 Thankful on behalf of my 22 yr old schizoaffective, untreated incarcerated son and how AOT could have prevented his situation from happening. Criminalization of mental illness is wrong. It will also be in an article in the Boston Globe and Provincetown Independent newspapers. www.smicaregivers.com #NationalShatteringSilenceCoalition #SchizophreniaandPsychosisActionAlliance #henryamador #NBC #NAMI #mentalillnessisnotacrime #SMIcaregivers #mentalillness #mentalillnessawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters

#parentingteens Self-soothing is an invaluable skill that empowers teens to build strength, character and self-confidence. "Inherently, when we see a child in pain, we rush to them—we comfort them-- we do whatever we can to ease their suffering. However, if we rush to their aid too quickly and immediately solve the problem, the child learns that you’re their pacifier." *** Adolescent & Emerging Adulthood Specialist: TeenSocialSkills.com LATeenLifeCoach.com LATeenWhisperer.com

It’s so exciting for us to highlight the work of our Diversity Lab team members! Recently, Courtney A. Munnings, our Mansfield Rule and Knowledge Sharing Manager, spoke with NALP and the Neurodiversity Task Force about her experiences with autism and neurodivergence in the legal profession and how workplaces can create safer spaces for disclosure. “When considering disclosing your neurodivergence, consider whether it will benefit you. Judgment can occur very quickly - think about how secure you feel in the space and how much your neurodivergence and/or disability connect to your identity in the workplace,” Courtney shared. Courtney also spoke about how recruiters and interviewers need more training on neurodiversity. “People don’t understand that when you meet one autistic person, you are meeting that one autistic person. Every facet of autistic identity is different. This is why I speak to the risks of disclosure; people may have assumptions about you based on the other autistic people in their lives, but people have different traits. Neurodiversity includes every person, just like biodiversity. Regarding recruiting, it’s not about ‘Do I want to get a drink with this person?’ but ‘Do they have these core competencies that they have demonstrated in the past and can build upon to be here with us and add to our culture?’” We are so thankful to Courtney for sharing her experience with others, constantly bringing her full self to spaces, and pushing for broader inclusion!
