The Mental Health Act Review - Five Years On As the Independent Review confirmed in 2018, reform of the outdated Mental Health Act is urgently needed.   But five years on since the publication of Modernising the Mental Health Act: Increasing choice, reducing compulsion, a subsequent White Paper in 2021, a Draft Bill in 2022 as well as a pre-legislative scrutiny report in 2023, we continue to wait for the Government's response to the Joint Committee's report and for the Mental Health Bill to be brought forward in Parliament.   Our upcoming online event will bring together key stakeholders to reflect on the last five years, the challenges and roadblocks to progress, and how we move forward. Speakers will include: Steven Gilbert OBE, Co-Chair of the Independent Review of the MHA, Anti-Racism Consultant, and Trustee at the Association of Mental Health Providers; Marsha McAdam, Expert by Experience; Stephen Hinchley, Senior Policy and Public Affairs Officer at VoiceAbility; and Rheian Davies, Head of Legal at Mind. We're pleased to announce the release of The Projected Cost and Economic Impact of Mental Health Inequities in the United States report, authored by national expert Daniel Dawes, Dean of Meharry Medical College School of Global Health. This new report builds upon the research of the 2022 Economic Burden of Mental Health Inequities report and finds that: The United States currently spends significant dollars on avoidable and unnecessary expenses related to mental health inequities, yet there is still a siloed system where individuals struggle to access the care they need. By 2040, the cumulative cost of untreated mental health conditions to the US economy is estimated to amount to $14 trillion – we must act now. The mental health crisis in the United States should be treated as an emergency requiring a cross-sector approach to improve patient outcomes. Read the full report: https://bit.ly/4dybF30

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is an area of cultural transformation that I have been particularly invested in shifting the mindset of healthcare and community on what it means to impact Mental Health in the US. Stigma prevents many from seeking treatment and managing Mental Health conditions. Coming out of the pandemic, I think it's been something parents realized how hard things can be for our youth and the struggles they are facing with Mental Health. What we have seen with burn out and the impact that healthcare staff is particularly concerning issue over the last 4 years. Addressing impact of staff burnout on mental health is not a new topic, it is one that proposed solutions have not considerably changed the direction we are going with rising rates of staff burnout. It continues to be a concern not easily solved. Hard economic times lead to delayed staffing and increase in workload. Being in a helper profession when you yourself may need some help, leads to higher risks for healthcare professionals.
