Powerfully pleased to see Eric Monteiro, OTO's Corporate Director of Marketing & Digital Strategy, on SC Biz News' New Executives Power List. The Q&A with this intriguing cohort is chock full of interesting anecdotes about first jobs, lessons learned, good advice, and some fun surprises about newly appointed execs from across South Carolina. Feeling fed up in your job? Transform your career and enjoy work again 😊 | Career Transformation Coach 🎙 | Podcast Host 🤘 | Rebel with a Cause
Reflecting on my corporate days, I can’t help but think of all the things that drove me nuts. I shared Part 1 of my top 10 pet hates yesterday (numbers 10 to 6). Now, here are the eagerly awaited top 5: 🏢 5. Pointless Office Days: Dragging myself to the office only to find no one I actually work with there. Even pre-COVID, I worked from home, but was forced into the office twice a week. Some days, the receptionist was the only person I spoke to! 🤝 4. Mismanaged Meetings: Stick to the agenda, folks. Nothing worse than endless tangents wasting everyone’s time. 🎯 3.‘Fun’ Away Days: Let’s be real – these so-called fun activities are anything but fun. 🧑🏻💼 2. Terrible Promotions: Promoting people to leadership roles based on technical skills or tenure instead of actual leadership ability. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. 🙈 1. Empty Corporate Values: Publishing values that no one follows – just stop pretending. I’m sure I’ve missed a few, but this list is a solid start. What frustrates you the most? #frustration #top10 #corporategrind #escapetheratrace #therebelliouscoach

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending our 'Pathway to the Boardroom' breakfast event hosted by Ben Derwent & Julie Colvin. Ben and Julie offered valuable advice for those embarking on their board career journey. Shedding light on the dos and don'ts of board selection and how to identify opportunities where you can truly add value. Here are the critical insights I gathered. Early Engagement: The importance of developing a board career while still in an executive role. Strategic Alignment: Selecting a board that not only complements your executive journey but also keeps you engaged for the long haul (typically two terms or around six years) is crucial for sustained success and interest. Enhanced Skillset: Board involvement broadens your knowledge and skills, significantly enhancing your executive performance. New Perspectives: Engaging with a board introduces you to new perspectives, valuable insights, and learnings from both industry and functional experts. For those considering a board career or looking to enhance their executive role through board participation, the insights shared were invaluable. #BoardCareer #ExecutiveLeadership #StrategicDevelopment #ExecutiveSearch

What if I told you that the way you leave a company could be the most impactful phase of your career there? It's not just about your last day – it's how you spend those remaining weeks that allows you to walk out with advocates and sponsors instead of burning bridges. Let me tell you about a leader I recently coached through this exact situation. He started his career at a major media company (that we all know) and over two decades, rose from junior roles to become a VP. He was one of the most revered people in the organization and won numerous industry accolades, but funding for his projects had dried up. His business unit was being deprioritized, which is not uncommon in his industry. He had 3 months before his planned departure. Here's how we made the most of this very unique window of time: 1. Let go of the reins: It's tempting to take on more to leave a legacy, but this was a disservice to his team. He instead focused on empowering others to step up and gave “stretch projects” to junior members much earlier than planned. 2. Strategic, structured networking: He set up 1:1s with senior leaders for career advice that weren't just pleasant goodbye chats. He reflected on “wins” from key projects over the years to refresh his memory and to strengthen specific relationships *before* leaving so he could lean on them in the future 3. Manage up, but look out for yourself: He balanced the needs of his manager to ensure all projects were handed over correctly but made sure to not get steamrolled by last-minute requests. 4. Be selective with your time: He focused on projects that benefited both him and the company long-term, even if they did not result in near-term wins (e.g. he implemented a new production budget forecasting process for the whole company) 5. Prepare for the future: This time was perfect for planning his next move, while still adding value to the organization Remember, no matter why you're leaving, if you have control over your exit timeline, use it well. He left with strong relationships and a network he could lean on. #careerdevelopment #executivecoaching
