It’s World 🐢 Day! Although turtles may not be what first comes to mind when you think about the Boreal Forest, all different kinds of turtle species are a part of ecosystems that help ensure the health and balance of wetlands and forests all across Canada. Ever seen a turtle basking in the sun? GreenGuardians : Embarking on a journey from the flourishing northern valleys to the thriving coastal groves of the South, let's applaud the stewards of our green mantle who cultivate more than mere foliage; they foster the air that animates our existence. However, amidst this verdure, a stark reality emerges: densely populated states bear a scant proportion of Recorded Forest Areas (RFAs), hinting that the national average belies the need for more expansive green sanctuaries. It's time for these populous regions to expand their RFAs, ensuring every breath we take is a testament to a greener tomorrow.

In contrast, we'll shed light on how non-native pine trees, despite their rapid growth, can often do more harm than good, leading to issues like soil acidification and nutrient depletion. Has the summer sun been drawing you towards the moana? 🌞🌊 As an island nation, our marine environment plays an important role in the lives of many New Zealanders. But without seeing underneath that sparkly blue surface, it can be difficult to connect with what’s going on in our ocean. Both TCDC and WRC should therefore be congratulated for their future proofing dedication here also. And Mark is missing the point with his offhand 'gardened' comment. With his former F&B background he should comprehend the functional contrasts between use of alien plants and indigenous. The latter of course evolved to excel in their environments, no matter how hostile that may be. Our indigenous littoral foredune plants are salt tolerant sand trapping and stabilising species that increase the resilience and storm buffer capacity of littoral margins. Proof of this resilience was provided by a coastal erosion model stating that SLR would be offset through to year 2100 by the diligent restoration of indigenous halophyte foredune plants (Kouwenhoven & Jenks 2015). And this restoration activity has also been cited by the IPCC as the "least cost and most enduring option known" (Jenks et al in IPCC 4AR 2007). The dunes were previously 'gardened' - with alien non-halophyte plants (marram, gazania etc), but now they are being restored with their former and truly native functional vegetation. The next critical step is to keep the dunes free of invasive alien species like kikuyu, gazania and SA ice plant.
