This Father's Day, we honor the incredible fathers participating in our FamilyWorks program. Since 1986, FamilyWorks has been a pioneering parenting program for men in state prisons, now active in eight New York prisons. And this April, DOCCS renewed funding for another five years! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who strive to be better parents for their families! #HappyFather’sDay

A recent report from HMI Prisons found that 66% of the children and young people in the secure estate were care experienced. This won’t come as a shock to those of you working in the system. Less than half of the children and young people who were spoken to felt that they were cared for by staff. A third of them reported that they didn’t have a single member of staff that they felt that they could trust. At YJSIP, we are committed to relationship centred practice and supporting our peers and our partners to prioritise the relationships they develop across the system, to enable children and young people to also form purposeful relationships that can support their sense of safety, security, and capacity to thrive. We know that trust is fundamental to any effective relationship. We also know that many care-experienced children are on a merry-go-round of retelling their story (often, a story of trauma) over and over . Some of these children eventually stop retelling their story. These children are sometimes then seen as hard-to-reach. We know that having that one person who cares about you and believes in you can be the difference. We also know that it’s not straight forward! For children and young people or for professionals. How can youth justice services and partners support the transitions to and from custody (and the associated reforming of professional relationships) that for many care-experienced children, compound the fractured and traumatic transitions they will already have experienced? What do our secure estate colleagues need from us to improve the outcomes for these children who are incarcerated? What is working well that can be shared? #youthjustice #careexperienced #youthempowerment

We didn't realize until last night we are actually twins Other than the system eating him up at the age of 14 and turning him into one of the toughest men in Michigan prisons for 21 years Nearly all of our thoughts and many life experiences are so spot on with each other Then to figure out we are both Scorpios...no wonder we could see the good in each other a mile away So thankful to know this amazing powerful soul and to learn more about his new life's assignment...I am forever blessed to not just break bread with him last night but to share our hopes and dreams of what we know can be done in more #reentry and #prevention services both in the adult and juvenile correction worlds If you don't realize it...prisons hold some of the most brilliant minds until we force them to only live in their fear state and become better and better at being the wrong kind of tough 💔 Become the right kind of tough like William like he has and change your life for the better...we only get one of them to truly enjoy so please work on your happiness and health levels so the world can honor you the way it is meant to I'm trying so hard to get him on LinkedIn as the world needs to learn more about him Have you found your twin out there? I'm lucky I have a few I can seriously totally see more sameness in than our external or internal differences in! The new government is making its first appointments, and it's a breath of fresh air to see them picking people who aren't just career politicians, but genuinely fit for their roles. One of my favourite choices is James Timpson as the new Minister for Prisons, Parole, and Probation. The same Timpson from the high street chain where you might have had your keys cut. Here’s a few reasons why I think this is a brilliant move: - Advocate for the cause of rehabilitating ex-offenders - Proven business leader at Timpsons - Family history of fostering (you really should read about that!) - Innovative trust-based management style UK prisons are in a shambles at the moment—overcrowded and in terrible condition. Clearly, our justice system needs a serious rethink. James Timpson’s appointment might just be the first sign of more smart, innovative decisions to come. Here’s hoping it sets a new trend.
