About the CMA vet market investigation, as a vet myself (for 15 years, over 7 of them in the UK), I only can say “yes please, and be as thorough as possible!” This industry needs to change in so many ways. An industry is much more than their own professionals. There’s no doubt that everyone in this industry works very hard day in day out. It’s a rewarding but challenging environment where everyday, nurses, vets and support staff work hard however, the industry itself needs to look at the current problems (some of them in place for nearly a decade) and address them properly and swiftly. As an industry we must stop bury our head in the sand and stop pretending the current small practice vet model works, because it doesn’t! Someone needs to say it out loud: it doesn’t work anymore! We as an industry, keep ignoring the signs, we keep blaming everything else but us (the industry). First, it was a shortage or UK vets, then Brexit, after the Covid Pandemic and now we keep saying people can’t afford vet care because of the costs associated with inflation, for example. It’s never our fault as an industry, but someone’s else. We need to change the way we work in practice, we need to change our business model and create different types of practices that offer difference services at different price points, instead of copying the practice next door’s model and offer the same, at the same cost. In other words, mainstream is not the solution, or at least not this type of business. The problem is not difficult to start solving, but there’s no general will for the industry to change, because as a business, it “still works”. The industry keeps growing in profit, no one can deny that, but we keep losing professionals, more and more people can’t afford basic vet care, mental health within the profession reached the lowest point ever, vets and nurses don’t want to be vets and nurses anymore (many of them realise that in the first 3 years or their career), the abuse towards the professionals is higher than ever etc, and we think all of this is normal?! Apparently we do, because year after year, the problems get bigger and bigger. We can change! But we only can change if we want to change. So please let’s get together and be serious about it.
