Growing The Work Mat Co. means knowing my strengths—and accepting what I can’t offer. When it comes to social media: 🙋♀️ Creating brand-aligned imagery? No problem. 🙋♀️ Running numbers for campaign budgets? I’m on it. 🙋♀️ Chatting with followers and turning a DM into a sale? Love it. But recording content? That’s where I draw the line. Demonstrating how our product works on-site, in an authentic and knowledgeable way? That’s not my thing. This is why I’m all about building our Ambassador Team. A short story on how I chose my company name ✍️ I was on a call with Venandah Madanhi FRSA, hashing out a contract, and I was stressed about naming my marketing agency. Vee hit pause on the contract chat and went all-in on helping me to brainstorm. She threw a question at me: "How do you want clients to FEEL when they work with you?" My response? "I want them to feel confident and relaxed, knowing I can handle all their marketing headaches." Then, Vee dropped the bomb: "What about Handled?" Anything they want, consider it handled. 👉 Here's what I'd do if my biz was being impacted by TEMU 1. Compete on value, not price 2. Add value where they can't ( yet) 3. Get to know my customers even better No point yelling at ppl for buying from there, we don't know their story and ppl can do what they want. For example; if you're a toy shop, create some more value based on your understanding of your market - Maybe start a play club, host child development experts, start a podcast addressing common parent worries you've been told in the store by yr customers. Think about what they'll need next. If they also need nannies, then partner with a nanny agency, or start one. The idea here is to welcome that one customer and be their go to person throughout the whole parent experience, not just one little bit of it. ( Easier said than done, but that's what I'd be doing. It's like, you have a barber shop for men, and you also own a balding prevention spa, and a hat company, and a shampoo brand, and an electric razor company, and 'Babies first haircut' special occasion service with photo and lock of hair, Cuts for Kids, etc ) CURRENT MODEL Sort of: you own a store or brand, could be a clothing brand, or tech, or anything. You decide what you think will sell well next season. You design what you want to get made. You place your order with a distributor or fabricator. The distributor places the order with a supplier. The supplier places the order with the manufacturer The manufacturer places an offer for raw materials (RMs) The factory makes the items, or the distributor delivers them to you. You recieve the order, unpack, put for sale in your store. You get consumer to be aware of it and they buy. That's a lot of middle folks, each clipping the ticket for their part. And slow NEW MODEL?: Consumer to producer direct. People all over the place, stare at their phones and click on things they like, to purchase them. --> data gets sent IN REAL TIME to manufacturer that the 'viral cat brush' is trending up by 23 percent -- > this triggers an order in the ERP for the RMs needed to manufacture more cat brushes --> cat brush delivered to the consumer's door, in 2 days, for 99c. The winner is the owner of the platform. Because data. Data is instant. Data is gold. Data is knowledge. Data is power. Imagine chat gpt but on crack . ⚡ We'll see the evolution of influencers, into 24/7 live streamers. We watch them go about their business, all day long. Social media Ecomm = Social Commerce. We'd join groups where we all watch a person do their daily things and we buy what they put on their face, the bath mat they use, the lamp they have. We can chat and say what we like and don't like, etc etc. With one click. It's not everywhere yet. So don't panic. I love this story. It speaks to the (sometimes) serendipity of branding, but it also points out something else: your differentiator - that which makes people remember you - doesn't always have to be the product. Instead of WHAT you make, it could be HOW you make it. It could be how you PACKAGE it (as this story shows). It could even be something that's exactly the same as your competitors, but you're the first to point it out and therefore, your customers will immediately associate that attribute with you, and no one else. The key? Tell the story. Humans are hardwired to remember stories more than stats. They remember quirkiness, things out of the ordinary. And isn't that really what a differentiator is supposed to be? The way to translate that into sales is find out what your potential customers care about and then tell the story about how you solve it. And what they care about isn't always what you think, especially when it comes to having your story resonate and be different from your competitors. Once they've told you what they care about, go deeper - I guarantee even the most hard-boiled buyer has emotional reasons behind their very logical requirements, even if they aren't fully aware of those reasons themselves. It's our job as marketers to uncover those deeper, more emotional reasons. That's where you find the differentiator that will resonate: the core emotion behind their reason for buying. Find that emotion, connect your story to it, and watch your messaging impact skyrocket. Tell the story!
Ever wondered why the Angostura Bitters label doesn’t fit? Cool story. When Dr. Johann Siegert died in 1870, his two sons took over the business. One year, as they were about the enter a competition, one brother was in charge of designing a new bottle and the other of designing a new label. The problem is that they didn’t consult each other about the sizes and therefore, the label came out too big for the bottle. As it was too late for them to do anything about it, they entered the competition with their bottle covered in the oversized label. They lost but, one of the judges, told them that this is what you call ‘signature labelling’. He insisted that the brothers should keep the big label as it was the perfect branding – who else was crazy enough to add an oversized label into a bottle? And so they did! They followed the judge’s advice and as of that day, all Angostura bottles were made and shipped with a “too-big-to-fit-the-bottle” label. Moral of the story? Make your brand cool, weird, loud, anything but normal. Thats how you stand out.
