👀🌐 A Growing Focus on Eye Health Myopia affects 30% of the global population today, and according to the World Health Organization, this proportion could reach 50% by 2050. But what's driving this increase? While heredity plays a significant role in the onset of myopia, intensive screen usage is also a major contributor to this rising health concern. In the first half of 2023, we spearheaded two trainings on myopia control featuring Dr. Martin Spiro and Dr. Seema Koria in Montreal and in Oshawa. These roundtables provided practical advice on selecting the right equipment, training your team, and educating your patients. As the incidence of myopia continues to climb, we're committed to staying ahead of this phenomenon. To that end, we're planning even more discussions featuring optometry experts with invaluable insights and practical tips. 👉 Let's continue to tackle this public health challenge head-on and work toward a future of enhanced eye health for everyone. #optometry #optics #myopia #eyehealth #prevention

It’s World Bedwetting Week! This week holds particular importance for me as it aligns with my PhD research. 🧒 Did you know 9-12% of children aged 5-15 years are affected by bedwetting? It’s crucial to understand that most children don’t simply outgrow this condition. 💡 My research, supported by Minze Health and University of Antwerp, is dedicated to improving the diagnosis and support of therapy for pediatric incontinence through innovative solutions. 📊 Bladder diaries play a crucial role in diagnosing the underlying reasons for bedwetting and subsequently choosing the appropriate therapy. Therefore, we are currently conducting a randomized controlled crossover trial across five study centers to compare patient compliance and data quality between the Diary Pod and traditional paper bladder diaries in pediatric patients. 🛏️ During this World Bedwetting Week, let’s raise awareness and enhance the lives of children and their families. Our commitment lies in developing products that not only enhance health outcomes but also elevate the overall quality of life and patient experience. https://lnkd.in/eGQ9nn4v #WorldBedwettingWeek #PediatricIncontinence #DigitalHealth

An estimated 316 million women worldwide had experienced pelvic organ prolapse (POP) by 2010, and this number continues to grow¹. Despite this common occurrence, many women express shame and negativity surrounding their symptoms. In a recent systematic literature review of 86 studies comprised of 20,000 women, 56% of respondents said stigma was a major reason for not seeking care². Other factors were lack of knowledge and dismissal from clinicians². For the month of June, we will be spreading #PelvicOrganProlapse awareness and sharing resources to help you navigate this journey. We encourage everyone to get involved, have open conversations, and foster support and empowerment around these life-altering pelvic conditions. Source 1. I had a sudden hearing loss in November 2021 following an illness. It took many frustrating months after the initial illness to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment. I have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which is moderate-to-severe for high frequencies. I now use hearing aids everyday. Hearing aids are a great help, but they amplify everything...and sometimes they itch...and it's a relief to take them out at bedtime to get some peace. Unfortunately, that's also when the tinnitus will kick in. It sounds like a ringing tuning fork being held to my ear: not what I want when I am trying to sleep! My audiologist described my tinnitus experience as similar to phantom limb pain, in that my brain is trying to compensate for the frequencies I can no longer hear by making them up. It gets worse when there is no other noise to occupy my brain. Distractions help reduce this phantom noise, so it's now easier for me to sleep with the low-level background hum of a TV or radio. Much like phantom limb pain, there isn't a huge amount known definitively about what causes tinnitus or how to treat it, so learning to manage has been an important part of my hearing loss journey. Tinnitus is invasive and can take a huge toll on the mental health of those affected, as can the long waiting lists for health and support. This is why the awareness promoted by Tinnitus UK and Tinnitus Week is important. #TinnitusAwareness #TinnitusWeek #SilentStruggle
🔊 Addressing the Silent Struggle: Prioritising Tinnitus Care in the UK In our recent survey, it was revealed that approximately 17% of individuals faced unacceptable waits of over 12 months for secondary care post-diagnosis. Shockingly, 65.8% expressed how these prolonged waiting times profoundly impacted their quality of life. At Tinnitus UK, we're deeply concerned about the silent struggle endured by those affected. It's alarming to note that a quarter of respondents described the toll as severe enough to trigger harmful thoughts, including self-harm or suicide. As the leading advocate for individuals living with tinnitus in the UK, we're calling for significant investment in tinnitus services. It's imperative that healthcare professionals recognise the urgent need to address this issue and prioritise accessible and timely care for those in need. In response to these alarming findings, we’re calling for immediate action: 👉 An evaluation of secondary care services and increased investment from commissioning bodies where necessary. 👉 Implementation of a standardised nationwide management model for tinnitus. 👉 Increased tinnitus education for medical professionals. Together, let's make #TinnitusWeek more than just awareness-raising; let's work towards better healthcare outcomes for people living with tinnitus. Join us in the #StruggleForSilence, because every voice deserves to be heard, and every struggle deserves to be addressed. #TinnitusAwareness #struggleforsilence #silentstruggle #TinnitusWeek

More than 1 billion people in the world live with unaddressed vision impairments of some sort, and Seva Foundation, a global nonprofit eye care organization that works with local communities around the world, is looking to combat that. A recent paper from the organization says that, when prioritized, eye health could yield $36 in benefits for every $1 spent, meaning every dollar spent on refractive error or cataract correction produces $36 in benefits. This is 6 times greater than the typical $6 return seen in other development interventions. The 2 highest returns outside eye care were seen in nutrition and noncommunicable diseases, which were at 13 to 1 and 9 to 1, respectively. Read More: https://ow.ly/gkV550QVunt
