Many clinicians prescribe “rest” for a wide range of athletic injuries. The justification is often times, “in order to let [insert body part or tissue] to calm down”. There is ALWAYS something an athlete can be doing in order to improve upon their individual health and sport. Example: If the athlete is not able to run. . . ▫️Can they walk through plays? ▫️Can they perform stationary sport-specific drills? ▫️Can they simulate game-like cardiovascular demands via stationary bike, row ergometer, etc? Removing an athlete from the team environment (in order to “rest”) can have a significant negative impact on their psychological, emotional and physical health.
