First responders - the holidays can be a challenging time for us. Increased call volumes, staffing shortages, and time away from family can heighten stress. But we aren't alone in this. All of us, whether police, fire, EMS, corrections, or dispatch, understand the sacrifice of missing family time to serve others in their time of need.
This season, let's focus on lifting each other up. Check in on colleagues to see how they're handling the holidays. Share stories and laughs to lighten the load.
Share your light with others because you never know what could help.

Safety over Rights.
"...to me, ‘safe’ means belonging. Friendship. Love. Noticing, and feeling noticed. Acceptance. Connection, and just enough control."
Timely blog with the recent release of the Age UK report on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

"In particular, a focus on ‘safety’ as mattering above all else is both paternalistic and inappropriate. Firstly, we cannot assume that an older person who has had restrictions placed on their liberty is always ‘safe’,"
"Safe" a word that drives decision making, "risk" over Rights. Not all Rights are absolute, following legal process, decisions can be made to 'interfere' in some Rights, which is where Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards comes into play, but it is too often used to rubber stamp a scenario because a person is deemed as 'safe' rather than focusing on how to achieve the outcomes a person would strive to achieve.
We make decisions everyday about where we live based on who we want to live with, how we want to live and experiencing all of life's vicissitudes (classic Hayden quote there). However once a person draws on social care is determined as lacking capacity to make decisions about housing and care, we seem to focus on 'safety' as a primary driver of decisions we make on behalf of individuals.
No, we can't assume on the face of it, that a person in a care home is 'safe' merely due to availability of care, we need to consider what we constitute as 'safe' and what 'safe' is to an individual. Determinations of 'safe' in social care are heavily influenced by our training and our value base.
It is no coincidence that we talk about 'Safe' under the Care Act and Mental Capacity Act. Legal frameworks are focused on safety in decision making, but reflecting on what that means is vital to ensuring people remain at the centre of the decisions made in their lives.

But what good is it making someone safer if it merely makes them miserable?
