Are you searching for a government contracting gig?! I work with a lot of government contractors. As well as those who are trying to break in and have absolutely no idea where to start. IMO - While standard job boards can work, there are much better options. I recommend checking out databases like SAM.gov to find registered contractors. They often list open positions. Special government job boards like GovGig focus on matching candidates with contracting gigs. You could also reach out to a Ticket to Work program service provider as they can help with finding contractor opportunities that align with your qualifications. And you should never neglect your resume, government resumes (whether city, state or federal) are just a bit different than the private sector. What else would you add? 👇 Todd Dybas Get Hired by LinkedIn News Business Insider #resumewriting #jobsearch #topvoice #opentoconnect #recruiter #jobalert #nowhiring #job #gethired #remotework #jobsearching #hire #jobsearchstrategies #hire
Contract jobs come with risks and benefits, Business Insider reports. That holds in the massive world of government contracting. The upside includes good pay, job stability and flexible working arrangements. The entry point, however, "isn't always clear." So, if you want a government contracting gig, where do you begin? First, know where opportunities exist. One recruiting agency told Insider that tech and data roles are in demand. These contract jobs, and others, often require a security clearance, which a large employer may sponsor. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eS9fwJz6 Summary ✍: Todd Dybas

While pay is sometimes considered a drawback of public sector work, government contracting opportunities can offer better pay than federal roles, while still providing stability and other perks like flexible scheduling. Even though the industry is vast and the pathway to enter isn't always clear, there's a lot of opportunity in the field. The White House has said that the US government signs 4 million new contracts and orders each year. To help make sense of the complex field, BI spoke to recruiters and individual contractors about how the system works and best practices to enter the field. We broke it down below to demystify the process. Read more in Business Insider https://lnkd.in/eqcmfBja.

Recent Superior Court decision reminds employees who have been dismissed that they have an obligation to mitigate their losses by accepting offers of comparable employment. In this Gannon v. Kinsdale Carriers, an employee with 22 years of service who worked as a officer clerk/accounts receivable/dispatcher was fired as a result of the employer's business closing. The owner of the business helped the employee find a job in dispatching with a local company. The employee argued that this job offer as a dispatcher was not a real job offer, because it was not firm. The Court disagreed, finding that an oral job offer was an offer. The employee also argued that she did not have to accept the job offer, as it was to be a dispatcher and she was trying to move away from that line of work. Again, the court disagreed, finding that it was not up to the employer to fund the employee's re-training initiatives. This decision is a reminder to employees that they will have to be pragmatic after a termination and be willing to accept a job that is comparable, even if not ideal. For employers, it's a reminder that it's a good idea to assist terminated employees to find a new job, for two reasons - 1. It's the kind thing to do 2. it may reduce the company's liability to that employee. As noted by the Court, "“no good deed goes unpunished.” #employmentlaw See Gannon v. Open Deck and Heavy Haul Connoisseur - Open to networking with shippers, carriers, and other vendors in the Heavy Haul and Open Deck space!
Another conversation about non-competes below \/ I have had many interactions from recruiters over the last few years that started with and ended with the "Are you subject to a Non-Compete Agreement" question. Though it was occasionally satifying to know that my skills were in demand, it served as a constant reminder that, unfortunately, career mobility was not available in this industry. The FTC rule change is undoubtedly being challenged in court, however, I believe it's a huge step in the right direction for employees. At the end of the day, we fulfill roles worthy of a NDA/NCA because we are hard-working employees and want to better ourselves and make ourselves valuable. It's also easy to see the baseline reasoning for a company to want to protect their privacy and customer/vendor relationships, as some employees join organizations with nefarious intent. However, this is not the case for most, as we are looking to make a great living and a positive impact on society. Personally, I believe that NCA's are a burden on a forever changing industry like transportation - one that not only stifles personal growth but also business growth. Competition is what builds success in transportation - a principle learned in every brokerage 101 class - and should be embraced on a company level as well. If your company culture and direction cannot keep an employee from engaging with opportunities outside of your organization, then you are not doing enough to retain and attract top talent. Though the grass is not always greener, many are willing to check for themselves. I am, of course, not endorsing those who take advantage of companies by stealing customer or vendor relationships, but allow your employees the comfort of knowing if it doesn't work out, they have options and can use their skills to rebuild without the danger of a lawsuit. *this is strictly my opinion and in no way endorsed by my organization*

What’s my WHY⁉️ In 2018 I volunteered at a Veterans homeless Stand Down, and ran into a person I was stationed with 12 years earlier…unfortunately they were enrolled in HUDVASH and weren’t one of the other volunteers.
🔥 Follow up to yesterdays post & and a question that was asked! 1️⃣ In a veterans case (using preference) - When they are within cert. - 120 days (you can prove this with a DD214 - based on timelines - you’ll probably need or use a “statement of service”). * CBP has a GREAT example!! 2️⃣ With that said, when you hear about the 180 rule: - that ONLY applies to retirees applying for DOD (and it’s 25ish agencies) jobs. 👉🏾 There’s roughly 436 departments - agencies - sub agencies. The 180 day “retiree” rule DOES NOT apply to the non DOD. But when it does - it can be waived: (not saying its easily or automatic ) ✅ “the Secretary concerned authorizes the appointment” ✅ “the position is authorized special pay under 5 U.S.C. 5305” ✅ “a state of national emergency exists” 🤑Above is directly from the “Vet Guide for HR Professionals” link in the comments * from U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) With that said….there’s a few memos out that allow Direct Hire. (They apply to EVERYONE) 😍 One came out in June - (Link in the comments). There’s a few other out there. 🥳 More info about DHA (link in the comments) 3️⃣ You can apply for jobs that are open to the “public” and not claim preference….but I’m not sure how far that will get you within the hiring process. Other than that - I’d be speaking to the hiring managers and recruiters. They’ll have a good idea a timelines (I’ve seen hiring swing both ways), even in a case or two - when they wanted certain applicants jobs were held for many months. You better call Tyrone

Accepting counter offers: 🚫 DON'T DO IT 🚫 While it may provide temporary relief, the underlying issues will remain and ultimately, you'll likely depart anyway. May create the impression of disloyalty and damage the relationship with your manager/employer. Raises questions about why you had to use the threat of leaving to secure higher pay/that promotion. 🤔 #hiring #recruitmentadvice #hiringadvice

All year, I’ve been talking with jobseekers who've been applying for hundreds of jobs in the private sector and getting no reply. PSA from today's The Wall Street Journal( and this I found genuinely shocking): Half of all government jobs attract just 5.5 applicants. The bottom 25% of government jobs get just 3 applications per role. Read more from our latest story on how gov't hiring has powered much of the new jobs growth this year: https://rb.gy/t0gcu
