Vice President of Sales & Operations | Transforming Supply Chain Efficiency | MacMillan Supply Chain Group | eCommerce & Supply Chain Expert
🚨 How will Canada’s rail strike impact our economy and logistics? A few days back, workers at Canada’s biggest railways, Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), voted to strike. This decision could disrupt freight shipments nationwide, impacting major entry ports into Canada. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union announced that 98 percent of its members support the strike mandate. This affects about 9,900 train conductors, locomotive engineers, and other rail workers. Both sides remain far apart in labor negotiations, making a strike likely after the 21-day cooling-off period ends on May 22. A rail strike could significantly affect logistics. Freight shipments, crucial for industries like manufacturing and retail, might face delays or stoppages. Major entry ports into Canada could see backlogs, disrupting supply chains and potentially leading to higher costs for consumers. However, MacMillan Supply Chain Group's Logistics Management has contingency plans in place, including alternative transport routes and modes, to ensure continuous and reliable service. How do you think this potential strike will impact your industry or daily life? Share your thoughts below! #logistics #supplychain #railstrike #transport

🚨 “US East Coast labor negotiations are going sour. So, we should expect, perhaps, for the first time ever, if not an outright strike, maybe a work to rule.” -Xeneta Analyst Peter Sand said this in June. And it seems he hit the nail on the head. End of September 2024 is when the largest union of maritime workers, the ILA, is renegotiating the terms and conditions for port operations. They are unhappy with carriers like Maersk using an Auto-Gate system that doesn't rely on ILA labor, and are posturing for a strike over this. They’re also demanding a large wage increase. If this strike happens, it will be a scramble to ship in time before the end of September. #Shipping #Maritime #PortOperations #LaborNegotiations #Logistics #SupplyChain #Freight #Trade #Business #Automation Don’t miss the next boat! As if the ongoing ILA labor disputes weren’t enough, Canada’s rail strikes are now in full swing, disrupting supply chains across the continent. The potential strike by the ILA at U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports is becoming increasingly likely as the September 30 contract expiration date approaches. Recent updates indicate that negotiations remain tense, with the ILA demanding substantial wage increases and strongly opposing automation efforts, which they see as a threat to job security. ILA President Harold Daggett has been vocal about the union's readiness to strike if their demands are not met, stressing that no contract extension or federal intervention is desired. The situation in the U.S. is compounded by the start of rail strikes in Canada, which are disrupting rail transportation across North America. These railroads are vital links in the supply chain, connecting Canadian ports to inland destinations in the U.S. The current disruptions in rail services, combined with the potential port strikes, could create significant bottlenecks, leading to delays, increased shipping costs, and challenges in managing inventory. To prepare for these challenges, it’s wise to develop contingency plans. Here are some strategies to consider: *Use Multiple Ports of Entry: Spread the risk and minimize the impact if certain ports are affected. *Work with a 3PL: Collaborate with a third-party logistics provider to diversify your supplier base and reduce reliance on specific ports and railroads. *Increase Inventory Levels: Boost your stock levels in advance to provide a buffer against potential delays, helping your business run smoothly. *Find Additional Warehouses: Set up warehouses closer to your customers to reduce the effects of port and rail delays and speed up distribution. How are you preparing for these potential disruptions?
As of 12:01 a.m. EST Thursday, Canada’s two largest railroads, Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), have locked out union employees. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference set a strike deadline after talks for higher pay, better benefits, and more predictable work schedules stalled, leading to a major disruption in Canada’s rail network. 🚂 BlueGrace will keep you updated as the situation continues to unfold.
