The field has seen further progress with the development of personalization techniques like DreamBooth and StyleDrop, which fine-tune a base diffusion model using images of specific concepts, enabling the creation of novel renditions in various contexts, whether they be objects, individuals, or artistic styles. 🔆 A prominent challenge in this domain is generating a specific subject in a user-defined style. This task encapsulates two complex issues: rendering any chosen subject in any style and the control of diffusion models through imagery rather than text. 🔅 One notable approach to address this is Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA), a Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning method gaining traction for its efficiency in learning low-rank factorized weight matrices for attention layers. Recent efforts in LoRA personalization have experimented with merging subject and style LoRAs through linear combinations, offering users a degree of control over each LoRA's influence. However, this technique has limitations in robustness and efficiency. 🔱 To overcome these challenges, Google Research and UIUC have proposed a new method called ZipLoRA. It adeptly merges independently trained LoRAs for both subject and style, consistently across various combinations. This method stands out for its user-friendliness and being hyperparameter-free, requiring no manual tuning of parameters or merger weights. ❇ ZipLoRA's effectiveness is underpinned by three key observations from the Stable Diffusion XL model: its strong style learning capabilities, the sparsity of LoRA weight matrices, and the varying alignment between different LoRAs' weight matrix columns. By employing an optimization-based approach similar to a zipper, ZipLoRA efficiently combines LoRAs while maintaining the quality of both subject and style representation. ✴ The contributions of this approach are significant, offering insights into the nuances of text-to-image diffusion models and style personalization, examining the impact of aligned columns in LoRA matrices, and introducing an innovative method for merging style and subject LoRAs. This pioneering technique, ZipLoRA, demonstrates notable improvements in various image stylization tasks, outperforming existing methods for merging LoRAs and other baseline approaches.

🤟 CCIC Roundtable report ahoy! 🤟 You spoke, #CCIC listened-and then we wrote it all up in this report, released TODAY! This is an essential report for the #Comics community and summarises thoughts & ideas from the 100 creators, publishers, funders, organisations, and press giants who attended our roundtable in January. Take a look here: https://lnkd.in/extzruK6 THIS is why Comics are important. THIS is what needs to be done. Our headlines: 🗣️Good support networks and resources exist for UK comic makers, but are not necessarily easy for the uninitiated to find. One simple but highly impactful action would be to increase their visibility. 🗣️Pay and conditions for artists do not reflect the time and skill required to create comics. Funding opportunities are opaque and challenging to apply for. The rise of AI for illustration is already robbing artists of opportunities to provide them with income. 🗣️The comics industry includes creators, publishers, booksellers, festivals, museums, commentators, and academics. All would benefit from knowledge- sharing within the comics community. Each is suffering from a lack of investment in the field/awareness of cultural impact. 🗣️To normalise the reading of comics and create wider audiences, we need to break into mainstream cultural channels. Hi @Literacy_Trust 🗣️Efforts need to be made for all aspects of the comics community to be more inclusive of minoritised groups. We need to encourage best practices, better accessibility and proactively promote diversity, inclusion, and equality of opportunity. 🗣️Resources need be provided to empower more people to self-organise, thus encouraging the creation of more change-making and activist groups, comics fairs, anthologies and localised support groups. A rising tide lifts all boats, pals…and we will get together! We’re hopeful that this conversation is the start of something BIG! #Comics #SequentialArt #CommunityBuilding #Artists #CultureSector #ArtsSector #Literacy

"I talk to Chief Mukudi’s great-grandson, a journalist and designer, and we laugh at the image of his great-grandfather. He too acknowledges the challenge in the hands of the designers. “One time I was designing a campaign poster that needed to have a broom in it. All the vectors I got were the witch brooms, I had to go find a broom and make it usable for my needs”. It takes immense effort and work for a designer to find basic things like akala sandals, brooms, guards, traditional cooking pots or any other commonly available item of material culture on the internet. “You know, the majority of Kenyans assume that beads are the same. We do not know that they contain important cultural meaning. And also, since we do not have reference points, we approximate or just round off to the nearest item available … If your community isn’t serious in putting itself in the digital space, the distortions, misrepresentations and being left out is inevitable,” says Job." https://lnkd.in/eUtmRB5S Kenyans, we need to become more serious about putting ourselves in the digital space, that or re-imagining a whole different digital future for ourselves. #TechNoirKe #afrofuturism

Oh the stories these women could tell if they were real. As much as we should worry about copyright, misinformation, and other issues that come with AI imagery, I must admit created images like this bring me joy. Why? Stock image providers have historically omitted people of color. And if they provided it, you either had to pay for it because the need was great but the supply was little, or you settled for whatever you could get. Even now some of the best stock imagery of Black professionals or just us enjoying every day life is behind a pay wall created by White owned businesses. Yet, images of White people doing the exact same things are free or less in price. So it's been frustrating as a content creator. But now thanks to AI we are literally able to create the imagery of highly melanated people in whatever profession, industry, location we can image--from outer space to fictitious lands--and it's is so damn freeing! I no longer have to spend precious time scrolling through images only to find nothing that really fits. I don't have to have a nice budget to pay for each individual image which adds up after a short while. And I'm not limited by age either. If I need an active older Black couple, I don't have to settle for a young one. HALLELUJAH! This image was created while working on a project. I didn't use it. But look at what a good prompt and AI created. Look at the diversity in skin tones, hair styles, suits, etc. I can literally place myself in this photo and know the convos and laughter that went on before and after this image was captured if it were real. So, for all its faults, AI's text to image generation is a much needed game changer. No, it's not create for the culture as we say, but when used properly it can help us properly illustrate and showcase it.

Power imbalance, cultural erasure, exploitation of the vulnerable, widening the inequality gap and the rift between the global south and the global north. Everything in the name of ’progress’ and ’innovation’: a thin veil trying to hide the underlying greed and grift. It is possible to develop services based on and driven by data in a way that respects humans and humanity. There are organisations out there doing this, ethically, not depending on theft, respecting both individuals and the society. The choices that we make are not inevitable, and the path we chose decides what society will be, now, and in the future. Use your power wisely. Even if it’s ’just’ not to use services offered by shady providers. #digitalethics #digitalcolonisation #responsibleai
