https://lnkd.in/e2fad6Uk UK direct-to-consumer dog-food company Butternut Box has secured £280m ($352m) in funding from global growth equity firm General Atlantic and existing investor L Catterton. The investment, which reportedly implies a company valuation of around £500m, will be used to expand Butternut Box’s presence in Europe. According to GlobalData’s market analysers platform, Europe is the largest pet-food market after North America and Latin America, being valued at an estimated $14.3bn. The rapid development of Europe’s pet food markets is largely related to the significant growth of its dog and cat populations during the pandemic. Data from the European Pet Food Industry Federation shows the European pet population grew by 11% from 305m in 2021 to 346m in 2022. Words by me. #globaldata #petfoodindustry #butternutbox #fdi

🌱How environmentally friendly is your pet? ✅Are you an owner or veterinary professional who takes active steps to reduce your pets environmental impact? ✅Do you think 'grain free', 'vegan' or 'high protein' means better food? ➡️Pets undoubtedly have an impact on our planet, more and more owners are wanting to make choices in their lifestyle choices to reduce that impact. ➡️In many ways, however, today’s flavour of pet ownership is in stark conflict with true sustainability. As much as we all love our pets like family members, they often come with an array of additional consumer goods. ➡️Even more potentially problematic is how to feed (and dispose of the waste of) the domestic carnivores and omnivores that we share our homes with. Pet owners are attempting to mitigate the carbon footprint of their pet’s food - in 2020, the top “ethical” pet food claims made by manufacturers in response to consumer demand included “organic”, “environmentally friendly”, and “vegan/vegetarian/plant-based”, among others. Pet owners also understandably place emphasis on the recyclability of their pet food packaging, as no one likes the feeling of tossing sachets in the bin every day. However, data presented at the 2023 American Feed Industry Association’s Pet Food Conference showed that packaging accounts for only 12% of the total sustainability of pet food. By far the biggest contributor to pet food’s carbon footprint is the ingredient list. ➡️Unfortunately, popular ingredient trends in pet food are some of the least sustainable. “High-protein” was the most common claim made by pet food brands in 2022, with “grain-free” also in the top five. While the picture is somewhat complicated based on which parts of animal and plant ingredients are utilised and how they are grown, land-based animal proteins are responsible for far higher greenhouse gas emissions than fish and plant proteins. Fish farming can also contribute to significant water pollution and habitat degradation. ❓So what do you do to reduce your pets environmental impact? Do you: ➡️Walk them locally? ➡️Do you feed them differently? ➡️Do you make choices on the type of pet you decide to own? Plant-Based Breakthrough: Meatly Clears UK Hurdle to Sell Lab-Grown Pet Food Meatly has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first company authorized to sell cultivated meat for pet food in the UK. This innovation allows pets to consume lab-grown chicken, eliminating the need for traditional farming. The process involves cultivating chicken cells extracted from an egg in large containers, similar to yogurt production. These cells are nourished with essential nutrients, resulting in meat production without involving animals. This method is beneficial not only for animal welfare but also for environmental sustainability. Cultivated meat requires significantly less land and water and is free from antibiotics, reducing the risk of disease transmission associated with conventional farming. Meatly has rigorously collaborated with UK regulators to ensure the safety and healthiness of their product. Extensive testing has confirmed that their lab-grown chicken is devoid of harmful bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Supported by £3.5 million in investments and partnerships with major pet food brands, Meatly plans to introduce their first samples this year. Their long-term objective is to make this innovative pet food more affordable and accessible. This development represents a potential paradigm shift in pet food, offering a sustainable and ethical alternative that benefits both pets and the environment. # Thank you Hikaru Tanaka for your submission!
