We have to talk about #Europe. In times of multiple global challenges European #unity is more important than ever. A united Europe connects people, safeguards internal #peace and creates #welfare. Combating #climate change requires a coordinated effort of all European countries. However, European unity is at risk. Radical groups are actively undermining the foundations of European #democracy. More and more vocal politicians and activists consider compromises and practical solutions as weaknesses. #Europeday on 9th May reminds us of the importance of European unity and solidarity. A month further in, on 9th June 2024, Europeans wil have the choice who will represent their interests in the European Parliament. For us at Deutsche Bahn, operating in the heart of Europe, Europe is at our hearts. Europe connects people and #DB connects Europe. More than 60,000 travellers daily use DB trains for travelling between Germany and its European neighbours. Together with our partners we are actively contributing to a sustaible Europe without borders.

CONFRONTING MODERN SLAVERY BY PROTECTING OUR SEAFARERS Slavery may sound like an issue from the long past, but this is not the case. Today, Fremantle Ports' team paused to consider the modern implications of the ancient issue of human exploitation and learned how they can help combat it. On Wednesday 18 October 2023, on anti-slavery day, valuable insights were shared by Mr Derek Sloan (pictured), Secretary to the Board of The Mission to Seafarers Fremantle. Derek explained how exploitative work practices are an ongoing problem for seafarers, a group of workers that are supported by the Mission and their local Fremantle group, Flying Angels. Worldwide, and active throughout Australia, the Mission to Seafarers helps by helping more than 1.6 million men and women across 260 ports, including: * connecting seafarers with their loved ones and children, often for the first time; * mentally and spiritually recharging them for the next leg of their voyage; and * helping them to access medical, welfare, and chaplaincy services.   While the overall risk of modern slavery in Fremantle Ports' supply chain is low, awareness is needed in case we are impacted through the normal course of operations through external interactions.   As the seafaring profession is regarded as being at risk for exploitation, Fremantle Ports is committed to playing a role in improving the welfare of those who work at sea, and offering training for its employees and contractors to identify risks as they emerge. People often ask what we do if we 'have to TUPE British cleaners' into our team when taking over a large contract. For us, this is an easy answer. Talent Beyond Boundaries (TBB) have released their annual report showing that the innovation has supported more than 1,900 displaced people to #migrate since its inception. The report covers TBB’s expansion into four new countries - #Belgium, #Ireland, #Portugal, and the #UnitedStates - and the expansion of their pilots in #Australia, #Canada, and the #UnitedKingdom. TBB is an organisation that helps refugees find skilled #employment in stable countries, working with the #privatesector to establish a clear pathway for migration. GIF supported TBB early on in its journey with a $230K grant to support the placement of the first 20 refugees located in #Jordan and #Lebanon in skilled employment, and to secure legal work permits and visas for them in #Canada and #Australia. From an #European perspective, #AmericanUnions are often, and perhaps, wrongly seen as weak. #Strikes hit the old continent more deeply and frequently than any other place in the #planet. However, #2023year has been a year to remember for #USworkers, and for #UAW, the undisputed star. Too early to say if it's a turning point but, for sure, dynamics have changed deeply in the last months. #America looks a little bit more to #Europe, despite, on average, the much lower guarantees on the #job and a system of #welfare closely linked to the job itself. #Geopolitics are able to unleash hidden but quite strong #forces. #useconomy #macro #labor #socialsecurity #deficit #gdp #employees

Historic furniture manufacturer Stickley has been actively hiring refugees to address the shortage of skilled labor in the American furniture industry. Over the past 40 years, refugees have come to constitute nearly 50% of the company's 1,600-person workforce in Manlius, NY, comprising 23 nationalities. Stickley's CEO, Aminy Audi, views this initiative as a humanitarian effort that enriches both the refugees' lives and the company's work culture. We’re proud to share our 2023 Annual Report—a collection of milestones from our programs and initiatives around the world. By the end of 2023, TBB and its partners had: 🌍 Opened refugee labor mobility programs in four new countries (Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, and the United States) and expanded our existing programs in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. 💼 Worked with more than 230 employers to hire more than 700 refugees and support their migration. 🏡 Supported more than 1,600 displaced people to access pathways to countries where they can rebuild their lives safely. 📈 Engaged more than 100,000 refugees who have signed up to our Talent Catalog, and supported them to explore labor mobility opportunities. 🤝 Built momentum and understanding among employers, partner organizations, and governments, enabling them to better support refugees to migrate for work and make the systemic changes necessary to scale this solution.
