Higher education is grappling with the fact that one of its core societal purposes – “knowledge dissemination” – has been displaced by technology. The internet, smartphone, and AI render the transmission of knowledge as more or less zero cost. Anyone can get almost any knowledge anywhere at any time. Higher education is slowly recognizing this fact and is turning its attention to something they call "experiential education." Every university now purports to do “experiential education.” No one really knows what that terms means, but people refer to things like study abroad, company tours, student projects, simulations, etc. It is perhaps best understood today as what it is not: lecture or classroom based. If everyone is doing experiential learning, who is doing it the best? On what basis do we judge the relative merits of experiential education? What does better look like? Who defines what better is? These are difficult questions, but the universities that can answer them will win in the marketplace. I don’t pretend to have answers, but I would nominate a few criteria to define what makes “experiential learning” better or worse: -The degree to which the learning is mutually beneficial for the student while simultaneously creating maximum value for as many people as possible as deeply as possible. -The degree of fidelity between the setting of the experience and the behavior/skills that are being develop/trained. -The degree to which the learning involves iterations of active doing (creating or performing), reflection, and coaching. -The degree to which the learning is done at scale, with superior quality, and without significant increase in ongoing cost. At the level of individual institutions, adapting to this reality will require significant reinvention, faculty skill development, rethinking the value of place and the college campus, and reimagining what a university looks like from the ground up.

Founder & CEO - Leap2US Education Consultancy I Passionate Advocate for Educational Excellence | Creating Pathways to Success for Students Worldwide
International students with aspirations for US universities often find the admissions process complex. While a strong GPA is undeniably valuable, Leap2US Education Consultancy recognizes it's merely one facet of a comprehensive application. This post sheds light on the significance of GPA and delves into the holistic review approach employed by US universities. GPA: Your Academic Benchmark The Grade Point Average, or GPA, serves as a standardized metric for US universities to evaluate academic performance across diverse educational backgrounds. A competitive GPA signifies your preparedness for rigorous coursework and strong study habits, both essential for thriving in a demanding US university environment. Understanding the GPA Balancing Act: Unweighted vs. Weighted There's no single benchmark GPA for top universities. Here's a breakdown to consider: Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA: Some schools consider both. The unweighted system uses a 4.0 scale, while weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0 for honors or AP classes. Holistic Review in Action: Admissions officers seek a complete picture. A strong GPA combined with a compelling personal narrative is a winning formula for a successful application. A Glimpse into Top University GPAs (Averages) Curious about average unweighted GPAs at top US universities according to U.S. News & World Report (2024)? Here's a sneak peek (remember, these are averages, and some students are admitted with lower GPAs): Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): 4.0 (expected) Stanford University: 3.66 Harvard University: 3.64 Yale University: 3.62 Princeton University: 3.61 University of Chicago: 3.79 Columbia University in the City of New York: 3.59 University of Pennsylvania: 3.53 California Institute of Technology (Caltech): 3.9 (expected) Duke University: 3.56 The Leap2US Takeaway: While a strong GPA is undeniably important, it's merely one chapter in your US college application story. Focus on building a comprehensive profile that showcases your academic achievements, talents, and unique experiences. With dedication and our expert guidance at Leap2US, you'll be well on your way to conquering US admissions! As a professional in the field of education, I am always fascinated by the diversity and excellence within the UK university system. From the historic institutions that have stood the test of time to the newer universities that are redefining education, the British higher education landscape offers something for everyone. One of the key strengths of UK universities is their reputation for academic rigor and excellence. Students are consistently challenged to think critically, engage in research, and develop a deep understanding of their chosen field of study. The UK has a long tradition of producing world-class scholars and researchers, and this intellectual tradition is carried on by its universities. In addition to academic excellence, UK universities also offer a wide range of programs and courses to cater to diverse interests. Whether you are interested in humanities, sciences, business, or the arts, there is a university in the UK that can provide you with a high-quality education in your chosen field. Moreover, the UK's universities are known for their global outlook, attracting students from all over the world and fostering an inclusive and multicultural learning environment. One of the unique aspects of UK universities is the tutorial system. This system allows students to have regular one-on-one or small group sessions with their tutors, enabling personalized attention and guidance throughout their academic journey. This close interaction with experienced academics not only enhances the learning experience but also fosters critical thinking, independent research, and analytical skills that are highly valued in the professional world. Furthermore, the UK's universities have a strong focus on employability. Many institutions have dedicated career services and internship programs, ensuring that students are well-prepared to enter the job market upon graduation. Additionally, the UK is home to numerous research and innovation hubs, providing students with ample opportunities to engage in groundbreaking research and collaborate with industry leaders. As someone who has had the opportunity to study and work in the UK, I can personally attest to the dynamic and enriching experience that UK universities offer. The vibrant campus life, world-class facilities, and supportive academic community create an environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential. In conclusion, when it comes to higher education, UK universities are truly exceptional. With their commitment to academic excellence, diverse range of programs, personalized learning experience, and strong focus on employability, they provide students with the foundation they need to succeed in their careers and make a lasting impact in their chosen fields. If you are considering pursuing higher education, I highly recommend exploring the opportunities that UK universities have to offer. They will undoubtedly open doors to a world of knowledge and possibilities.

Shifting the focus from what the student *knows* to what the student *can do*. Love this Higher Education Policy Institute blog from Grit friends Rebecca Huxley-Binns, Professor Graham Scott Scott and Mike Ewen about competence-based higher education at the University of Hull. With self-awareness as one of its central pillars, the approach “instils a commitment to lifelong learning and professional and personal development… it builds graduate identity and professional profiles. And it is inclusive to students with protected characteristics and those historically excluded from higher education.” We see how it’s the breakthroughs that can occur with increased self-awareness that can have students re-think who they are, fully appreciate everything they bring with them into their time at university. And with this they can see new possibilities for who they could become: they are much better positioned to seize the opportunities that university offers and work with purpose towards a career path that works for them. https://lnkd.in/eVFJYf65
