February is LGBT History Month and this year's theme celebrates the LGBT community's contributions to the field of #Medicine. 🌈🔬 Arguably one of the community's biggest impacts was in the development of modern #PatientAdvocacy, a topic we discussed with Neil Bertelsen as he relayed the story of how HIV patients shaped a whole new approach to patient/regulator engagement. "What happened in those last years of the 1980s was something that we hadn’t seen before: a genuine coming together of both the medical community and the patient community, where we became hand-in-glove, basically learning at the same speed." We stand on the shoulders of these giants 🙏 Learn more about how HIV patients became the architects of modern patient advocacy here 👇https://hubs.li/Q02jtNd-0 #LGBTPlusHistory #UnderTheScope

I am deeply disturbed by the case of Caymir Weaver, a 23-year-old individual who is currently incarcerated in Ohio for allegedly exposing someone to HIV. What makes this case even more troubling is the fact that Weaver could not transmit the virus in the first place. Ohio has a total of six laws that criminalize living with HIV, leading to numerous prosecutions in recent years. These laws are not only unjust but also perpetuate harmful stigmas surrounding HIV and AIDS. They only serve to further marginalize and discriminate against individuals living with the virus. Weaver's case highlights the urgent need for reform in Ohio's legal system. We must educate ourselves and others about the realities of HIV transmission and work towards dismantling discriminatory laws that do more harm than good. Living with HIV should not be a criminal offence. It is a public health issue that requires compassion, support, and access to proper healthcare. Instead of punishing individuals for their HIV status, we should focus on promoting comprehensive sex education, increasing access to preventative measures such as PrEP, and destigmatizing HIV and AIDS. As a society, we must do better. We must advocate for the rights of individuals living with HIV and push for legislative change. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community, regardless of their HIV status. #HIV #AIDS #Healthcare #HumanRights #Advocacy LGBT LGBT Foundation LGBTQ REAL LGBTI Business Conference

For years those living with HIV were forced to cope with limited life expectancy, but now, that’s not necessarily the case. Many living with HIV go one to live long, full lives. There’s still much to be done surrounding healthcare, stigma, and spreading the word about the importance of getting tested, but longer life expectancy is a huge win. • • • #nonbinary #queer #trans #transgender #lgbt #lgbtq #lgbtqia #hiv #HIVandAging #hivprevention #nationalhivaidsandagingawarenessday #hivstigma #reducestigma #monday #mondayminute

Today, on National HIV and Aging Awareness Day, we reflect on research presented by Alexandra M. Bonnet, LMSW, and Dr. Rodolfo R. Vega, PhD with Waves Ahead at #2023USCHA. They shared that despite higher than average education and medical insurance coverage and little to no language barrier or discrimination, 264 older LGBTQ survey participants living with #HIV in #PuertoRico face steep gaps in other quality of life indicators, including - unmet medical needs ranging from mental health services, breast and prostate exams, pap smears, oncology, physical disability care, and gender-affirming care; - almost half living off of less than $15,000 a year; and - 1 in 5 people live in unstable housing. As people age, their social conditions, bodies, and needs change, and their services should change with them. Integrated, accessible, #person-centered care is a must as people age with HIV. #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth #LGBTQ #HealthEquity #mentalhealth #elder #USCHA2023 #JSIatUSCHA2023

Grindr accused of selling users' data on their HIV status 🛑 The world's biggest dating app for the LGBT community is allegedly sharing users' highly sensitive information for commercial purposes, including the date of their latest HIV test and HIV status. In 2021, Grindr was already fined €5,800,000 by Norwegian authorities for breaking #GDPR as it shared users' data without their consent with third-party companies for advertising purposes. 👉 How long before we realize that these tech giants have no regard for our #intimacy? Kudos to Chaya Hanoomanjee from Austen Hays for leading this strategic litigation, which may shed new light onto exploitative practices of dating apps and improve standards for the whole #sextech sector. #digitalrights #techlaw #dataprotection #LGBT

Did you know that discrimination hinders access to HIV care for millions worldwide? This Zero Discrimination Day, let's commit to breaking down these barriers and ensuring everyone has the right to health. Discrimination against marginalized communities, including women, girls, and LGBTQ individuals, remains a significant obstacle to achieving health equity. These harmful practices violate fundamental rights and impede access to essential HIV services. This year, let's take action: Uphold the rights of all individuals. Advocate for the removal of discriminatory laws and policies. Stand with marginalized communities in their fight for equality. Support organizations working towards health equity. Everyone has the right to health. Let's make it happen! #ZeroDiscriminationDay #HumanRights #HealthForAll #TogetherWeCan #EndAIDS #StandUpForEquality #UN #UNAIDS #HealthEquity #HealthEquality #CulturalHumility United Nations
