Some of our customers claim the Green Johanna is rat-proof as they have never had any problems with these unwelcome visitors. That is the experience of most people, but since rats have been known to chew through concrete, glass and even some metals nothing can really be called rat-proof. However, there are steps you can take to deter rodents by making your compost bin and garden so unattractive to them that they will move on to a more accommodating environment. If there’s a problem with rats locally it’s worth checking whether a neighbour is exacerbating the issue by leaving food out for wildlife. This was the experience of one of our customers, who discovered that his next-door neighbour was getting animal bones from a butcher and leaving them in his garden overnight to feed foxes. The neighbour even thoughtfully left his garden gate open at night to encourage visiting wildlife. But foxes weren’t the only ones coming round for a feast. Such issues obviously need to be addressed first. When beavers construct dams that partially block streams and rivers, the diverted water collects in ponds in which these animals can build safe homes away from predators. Beaver dams also cause the saturation of nearby land, where a multitude of wetland species can thrive. But the North American beaver population, which exceeded 100 million in the 1600s, has fallen to between 6 and 12 million today; with fewer beaver dams, fewer streams in the western US are connected to their surrounding landscape. For Montana-based rancher Amber Smith and seven other ranchers, the remedy to this situation was to create Beaver Dam Analogs, or BDAs—with help from the Montana Conservation Corps and WWF’s Sustainable Ranching Initiative. Super excited today to launch of Forest Love initiative and announce our partnership with Chloris Geospatial. You can learn more about the partnership from the Chloris post below. Bottom line for us is that we really see their technology as a game changer in our collective efforts to understand and better protect, yes, better love our forests and all the magical things they bring us. Why Forest Love? Pond Foundation wants to highlight and nurture the spiritual connection between humans and forests and the word ‘love’ captures how we feel about forests and how we want to inspire others to feel about them. We could have called it the Forest Protection Initiative, or something similarly bland and boring, but there’s nothing bland or boring about forests.   Forests teem with vibrant, magical life; they’re great for the planet, for so many species and for humans too. We see people as being integral to forest ecosystems, not separate from them and not a part that should ever be separated by political or forest management decisions. We acknowledge, deeply respect, and love the role that indigenous and local communities play in protecting forests the world over. A central part of Forest Love’s work will be to help communities secure the resources they need to continue their work to both protect their forests and grow their communities. Another part is to help people who have become disconnected from forests to find reconnection to that most ancient current.   Our goal. So many forests are under threat – from logging, fire, mining, agricultural clearance, pests, and disease and most insidiously, from climate change. If we lose them, we lose life itself. Our goal is to support the protection of as many hectares of forest as we possibly can. We'll share more about Forest Love in future posts, but for now, we're celebrating this partnership with Chloris Geospatial that will underpin this work.
