In Lewes, East Sussex, South East England, The United Kingdom, a former industrial site is in the process of becoming the largest engineered timber residential development in the country. According to developer Human Nature, once completed, the project will be the most sustainable housing development in the country as well. The 685 home development, will be built on a former brownfield industrial site which will be remediated before construction of residences and commercial buildings. Some of the existing buildings on the site will be repurposed and adapted for modern day use and serve as public spaces including a taproom, canteen, event hall, fitness centre, workspace and studios. Powered by a combination of on-site solar power and off-site renewable energy resources, the new development hopes to become home for a wide range of individuals of all income ranges and provide them all with a comfortable and sustainable place to live. Public squares, gardens, riverside walkways adorn the neighborhood with pedestrian walkways taking precedence over driving. Electric car shares, electric bikes, and an electric shuttle program, all work together towards a lower impact community. Developments such as this, show the capabilities of creating low impact, sustainable neighborhoods. We can repurpose and reuse existing sites, remediate past damage, and create incredible new projects on them, all while being environmentally conscious.
