#FridayFeature! 📸 Have you noticed that many Island potato fields are starting to turn brown? These fields have recently been treated with herbicide in preparation for the fall harvest. Most farmers refer to this as “top-killing.” Top-killing benefits potatoes in the following ways: 🌱 Facilitates the separation of the vine from the potato tuber, making harvest easier and more efficient. 🥔 Improves the durability of the potato skin, reducing the risk of disease transmission. ❄️ Allows for better storage throughout the winter months. 🙌 For seed potato production, this practice reduces the risk of viruses and ensures potatoes are the perfect size for seed. #DYK This practice is a crucial step in potato production. It stops leaf and vine growth, and is typically done 10 days to 2 weeks before harvest. It's important to note that not all potatoes require this treatment; for example, those headed directly from the field to a processing plant or packing facility often skip this step. Stay tuned for next week's feature! 🌱
